Good First Day at Mixed Doubles Championship for Manitobans

(Thursday Evening): Manitoba Champions Krysten Karwacki and Derek Samagalski lost a high scoring extra end game to fomer Manitoba champion Ryan Fry and his partner Emma Miskew on the late draw Friday. The extra end loss wrapped up a mostly positive first day for Manitobans competing at the Home Hardware Mixed Doubles Championship in the Caolgary curling bubble. Earlier in the day Manitoba champions Shannon Birchard (with Caitlin Schneider); Kerri EInarson (with Brad Gushue); and Jennifer Jones (With Brent Laing) had all posted first wins while Kaitlyn Lawes (with her nephew Connor Lawes) took a loss. Selena Njegovan & Reid Carruthers (with a win over Breanne Meilleur & Mark Nicholls) and Kadriana Sahaidak & Colton Lott were winners on opening day.

(Thursday Afternoon Draws) Strong Mixed Doubles Start Continues for Manitobans: The Manitoba team of Selena Njegovan and Reid Carruthers defeated  Breanne Meilleur and her partner Mark Nicholls 11-4 in their opening match of the Canadian Mixed Doubles Championship. At the same time on the noon draw, Scotties champion Shannon Birchard and her partner Caitlin Schneider posted a 7-2 victory over Emma MIskew & Ryab Fry. Kaitlyn Lawes, curling with her nephew Connor, lost 9-2 to Oye-Sem Won/Trevor Bonot (Northern Ontario) on the 3:30PM CST draw. Manitoba champions Krysten Karwacki & Derek Samagalski play on the late draw Thursday.

(Morning Draw) Strong Mixed Doubles Start for Manitobans: A Manitoba team and two teams featuring Manitoba women champions all opened play on the first draw of the Home
Hardware Canadian Mixed Doubles Championship in Calgary.

Kadriana Sahaidak and Colton Lott, curling out of Winnipeg Beach, opened with an 8-2 win over Clancy Grandy & Patrick Janssesn (Oshawa, ON). The young team is one of Manitoba's most successful, having won a gold medal in Mixed Doubles at a World Cup event in Sweden three seasons ago and having reached the playoffs of the Canadian championship the past two seasons.

On the same opening draw, Canadian Champion Kerri Einarson, with her partner Brad Gushue, defeated Bayly Scoffin/Wade Scoffin  (Whitehorse, Yukon)  9-1 AND Jennifer Jones, with partner Brent Laing, defeated  Émilie Desjardins/Robert Desjardins (Chicoutimi, Quebec) 8-3. The Einarson and Jones teams are playing in the same competition pool and will face each other Friday afternoon.
