Manitoba Teams Fall Short at Canadian Mixed Doubles

Wednesday Mar 30 2016

Mike & Dawn McEwen were the only Manitobans to advance to the playoff round of the Canadian Mixed Doubles Championship in Saskatoon. The pair went 7-0 through the round-robin but in the playoff round, they met Ryan Fry and Emma Miskew. The quarterfinal game was tied 5-5 after five ends and 6-6 after seven. Fry & Miskew won 7-6 with a single on the final end.

Manitoba Teams Set to Contest Canadian Mixed Doubles - Three members of the Reid Carruthers team will compete in next week's Canadian Mixed Doubles Trials in Saskatoon, part of seven teams with Manitoba connections in the 32 team field. Carruthers will partner with Joanne Courtney while Colin Hodgson will team up with Chelsea Carey and Derek Samagalski's partner is Sherry Just. Also in the competition are Ashley Ewasiuk and Mark Anderson, the Brandon-Riverview team which won the Manitoba Mixed Doubles, last year's Manitoba champions Ray Baker and Lisa Menard-Dauphin, Dawn & Mike McEwen, and Jason Gunnlaugson partnered with Michelle Kruk.

The McEwen, Gunnlaugson, Anderson and Samagalski will all play in the same pool in the round-robin competition. Also in that grouping is the defending Canadian champion pair of Kalynn Park & Charlie Thomas. The Carruthers and Baker pairs are slotted in with Ryan Fry, partnered with Emma Miskew. Hodgson and Carey will face tough competition from Rachel Homan and Mark Nicholls.
