Lukowich Wins Asham Event, Birchard Family Wins Three Events

Sunday Jan 17 2016

With the Viterra berths already assigned to Mark Lukowich-Granite, Derek Oryniak-Granite, and Troy Hamilton-Fort Rouge, the main focus of attention for curling fans Monday evening was the ASHAM event final with Lukowich playing Scott Ramsay-Thistle. Lukowich posted a 6-5 win for his second bonspiel championship in three years.

Oryniak beat Hamilton 7-6 to win the FREE PRESS event and Dennis Bohn-Assiniboine Memorial beat Doug Harrison-Granite 5-4 in the NOTT AUTOCORP final.

The story of the evening however, might have been Pembina's Birchard family with father Bruce, son Daniel, and daughter Shannon all skipping their teams to bonspiel  event victories. Bruce's Pembina team (pictured with the writer), entered in the name of Tom Cameron who made his travel plans home to Nova Scotia for Sunday on an assumption 'we'll never make it to a final', won thecurler.com event with a 6-3 win over Phil Barto-Charleswood. Daniel's Pembina team won the LAZER GRANT event 7-1 over Cliff Murphy-Deer Lodge. Shannon and her Pembina team beat Travis Cayer-St Vital 8-5 to win the LAFARGE CONSTRUCTION event.

Following is a complete summary of all Manitoba Open event finals.

Sunday Late: Manitoba Open Finals at Heather & Pembina - The 128th Manitoba Open Bonspiel will wrap up Monday evening when 2002 Manitoba Champion and 2014 Bonspiel Champion Mark Lukowich-Granite plays Scott Ramsay-Thistle at 7PM the Heather Curling Club in the ASHAM Event final. As Ramsay already has a Viterra Championship berth in hand, win or not - Lukowich has already earned an invitation to compete in Selkirk in February.

Also at Heather, in the  FREE PRESS final Derek Oryniak-Granite, who was finalist in the Canola Junior Men's last Sunday, will play Troy Hamilton-Fort Rouge and in the NOTT AUTOCORP final 1978 Manitoba Champion and MCA Bonspiel Grand Aggregate winner Doug Harrison-Granite will play Dennis Bohn-Assiniboine Memorial.

Both Bohn and Harrison already have Viterra berths so therefore Oryniak and Hamilton will be awarded the final two entries to the Selkirk championship as the winner earns a berth and the event finalist will be the highest finishing eligible team in the Free Press/Nott Autocorp events, so will earn the berth on the 'count-back'.

Sunday PM: NOTT AUTOCORP & FREE PRESS Semi-Finals Set - Junior teams skipped by Derek Oryniak and Braden Calvert will meet in a FREE PRESS event semi-final at 9pm Sunday evening at Fort Rouge with a chance to advance to the FREE PRESS final and perhaps a Viterra Championship berth on the line. The other semi-final features Jared Kolomaya who already has a Viterra berth. So a win by Kolomaya over Troy Hamilton-Fort Rouge might give the Viterra entry to the winning junior squad. The Kolomaya-Hamilton game is also at Fort Rouge at 9pm.

The same scenario exists in the NOTT AUTOCORP semi-finals. Doug Harrison already has a berth as does Dennis Bohn and Tyler Drews. Harrison plays Darren Tessmer and Bohn meets Tyler Drews. If Tessmer wins, he'll be playing either Drews of Bohn and will be the highest finishing eligible team. Both games will be at Pembina at 9pm.

Results of the semi-finals in both NOTT AUTOCORP & FREE PRESS events will be taken into account in setting a tiebreaker scenario if both events are won by teams already holding berths.

A feature game could happen in the FREE PRESS event semi-final where 2015 World Junior Champion Braden Calvert and this year's Manitoba Junior Men's finalist Derek Oryniak would meet if they both win on the 3pm draw. That game, if it occurs, would take place at 9pm Sunday at Fort Rouge.

Meanwhile, with Scott Ramsay already holding an invitation to the Viterra Championship, 2002 champion Mark Lukowich has confirmed his invitation to play in Selkirk. Lukowich meets Ramsay for the ASHAM event championship Monday at 7pm. (Highlighted teams below already hold Viterra invitations)
