Safeway Bids Farewell as Title Sponsor of Provincial Curling Championship

Thursday Oct 01 2015

Today CurlManitoba announced that after 21 years as the title sponsor of the Manitoba Men’s Provincial Curling Championship, Safeway will be stepping down from the lead sponsorship this upcoming season.

“Safeway has been an incredible supporter of our sport for over half a century, and we’re particularly grateful for their substantial support and leadership over the past two decades,” said CurlManitoba President Sam Antila.    “Safeway’s generous investment in our sport over the past two decades has helped grow the Manitoba men’s championship into a premier event, not just in Manitoba but on the national scene as well,” continued Antila.

”We are exceptionally proud of the impact our Manitoba investments in this sport and look forward to finding new ways to continue to build on our valued partnership with the people and communities we’ve worked so closely with,” said John Graham, Director Public Affairs & Government  Relations for Safeway.  Beyond curling, Safeway has developed deep routed commitments with many Manitoba organizations, last year donating over $3 million in food and financial support to a broad selection of community events and causes.

The 21-year Safeway history as men’s championship title sponsor is second only to the 50-year support of Macdonald Tobacco, the original sponsor. The company’s support of curling in Manitoba dates back to the Empress Jam Pail curling days in the 1960s, and has included sponsorship of the Safeway-Lucerne event in the MCA Bonspiel, and title, presenting and lead sponsorships in a broad range of local, national and international championships, including several World, Brier, Scotties and Olympic Trial events.

After hosting its first Safeway Select in the old Winnipeg Arena in 1995, the championship under Safeway’s sponsorship was played in Morden, Virden, Portage La Prairie, Brandon, Neepawa, Selkirk, Steinbach, Beausejour, Dauphin and Winnipeg.

The new title sponsor for the Manitoba Men’s Curling Championship will be introduced at a news event to be hosted by CurlManitoba at Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame Museum on October 7, 2015.
