Montford, Bohn Teams Win Season Opener Mother Club Classics

Michelle Montford’s Assiniboine Memorial team captured the championship of the Mother Club Fall Classic with a 10-3 final game victory Sunday over Beth Peterson and her Fort Rouge team. The event at Winnipeg’s Granite Curling Club was the first event of the fall season the Manitoba Curling Tour presented by Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries.

Montford (Lisa DeRiviere, Sara Van Walleghem, Sarah Neufeld, Courtney Blanchard) earned the $2,500 first prize and solidified their hold on first place in the MCT Rankings as the fall season begins. Going into the weekend event, the Montford team already topped the ranked thanks to their performances in the earlier January-March 2015 events.

The finalist finish for Peterson (Robyn Njegovan, Melissa Gordon, Breanne Yozenko) moved the 2014-15 Manitoba Junior champion team into the top five of the MCT rankings as they make their move into the women’s ranks for 2015. Team Peterson earned $1,800.

Semi-finalists Kerri Einarson-East St. Paul and Kim Link-East St. Paul each earned $1,250 and moved to second and sixth place on the MCT Women’s rankings respectively.
Defending champion Kristy McDonald-Granite qualified for the playoff round along with Joelle Brown-Assiniboine Memorial, Jill Thurston-Granite and Darcy Robertson-Rossmere. The quarterfinalists earned $800 and all are in the top ten in the early season rankings.

In the Mother Club Fall Classic Men’s division, David Bohn-Granite posted an extra end 4-2 win over Matt Dunstone-Granite in the final game. Bohn (Justin Richter, Tyler Forrest, Bryce McEwen) also cashed a $2,500 first prize cheque to start the season while Dunstone (Colton Lott, Kyle Doering, Robbie Gordon) pocketed $1,800. Bohn and Dunstone start the seasons ranked fourth and fifth respectively on the MCT Rankings thanks to their Mother Club Classic results.

Semifinalists Scott Ramsay-Granite and JT Ryan-Assiniboine Memorial earned $1,250 and share sixth place in the rankings.

Taylor McIntyre’s Granite foursome, winner of a provincial men’s championship berth at a spring qualifying event, reached the playoffs along with Richard Muntain-Pinawa, Braden Calvert-Deer Lodge, and Daley Peters-East St. Paul. The four quarterfinalists earned $800 and also are all in the top 10 in the early season rankings.

Accumulated rankings across the MCT season earn the teams an invitation to the championships of the Manitoba Curling Tour presented by Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries.

SUNDAY: David Bohn (4-2EE over Matt Dunstone)and Mchelle Montford (10-3 over Beth Peterson) are the champions of the 2nd annual Mother Club Fall Classics at Winnipeg's Granite CC. To reach the finals, Bohn defeated Scott Ramsay (4-2), Dunstone beat JT Ryan (5-1), Montford defeated Kerri Einarson (6-5), and Peterson beat Kim Link (5-4).

Quarterfinalists in the men's 'spiel were Richard Muntain, Taylor McIntyre,Braden Calvert, and Daley Peters. In the women's event, the quarterfinalists were Darcy Robertson, Kristy McDonald,  Joelle Brown, and Jill Thurston.

SATURDAY LATE: The Daley Peters and Matt Dunstone teams had perfect 4-0 records and six others at 3-1 advanced to the Men's playoff round Sunday morning at the Winnipeg Granite's Mother Club Fall Classic. Matt Dunstone will play Taylor McIntyre, Richard Muntain takes on JT Ryan, Braden Calvert meets David Bohn, and Scott Ramsay is Peters' opponent in the first round at 10AM. In the women's division, defending champion Kristy McDonald and Jill Thurston advanced unbeaten along with Michelle Montford, Kerri Eianarson, Beth Peterson, Joelle Brown and Darcy Robertson (all 3-1) and 2-2 Kim Link (best of five 2-2 teams based on 'shoot-out' score). In the first playoff round, McDonald plays Link, Peterson meets Robertson, Einarson takes on Brown and Thurston plays Montford. These games ar also at 10AM.

SATURDAY EARLY: With a game left to play in the round robin portion of the event, four teams have perfect 3-0 records in the Men's Division of the Mother Club Fall Classic at the Winnipeg Granite Curling Club. Daley Peters and JT Ryan lead their respective groups while Braden Calvert and Matt Dunstone share the lead in their grouping. Richard Muntain leads thee fourth group with a 3-1 record. On the final men's round robin draw at 6pm Saturday, Calvert plays Dunstone, Peters plays Andrew Irving (2-1) and Ryan plays Ray Baker (0-3). Playoffs are scheduled to begin Sunday at 10AM with the final game at 4pm.

in the Women's Division, Jill Thurston, Beth Peterson, and Kerri Einarson lead their groups with 3-0 records. On the ice on the 3pm draw, Janet Harvey and Kristy McDonald lead the  fourth group with 2-0 records. McDonald and Harvey will meet on the 9pm draw - the final women's round robin draw.

Thursday: Draw Set for Mother Club Classics - The reigning champion teams will return to defend their titles at this weekend's Mother Club Curling Classics at the Granite Curling Club-Winnipeg, the opening events of the Manitoba Curling Tour season. The women's champion team of Kristy McDonald (Kate Cameron, Leslie Wilson-Westcott, Raunora Westcott) returns intact. On the men's side, Sean Grassie skipped the title winning team a year ago. His team (Corey Chambers, Kody Janzen, Stu Shiells) returns after joining forces with Daley Peters for the 2015-16 season.

The Peters foursome will play in a round-robin group at Granite with several other teams with new line-ups for this season. Andrew Irving - Pembina (Daniel Grant, Jim Coleman, Andrew Peck); David Bohn - Assiniboine Memorial (Justin Richter, Tyler Forrest, Bryce McEwen); and Steen Sigurdson (Tyler Calvert, Curtis Atkins, Morey Zarwich) have interesting new line-ups which will open their season against Peters. Evan Workin and his team from Fargo, North Dakota will also compete in this group.

In the Women's event, McDonald's Granite foursome will compete in a group with Courtney George - St. Paul, Minnesota, Janet Harvey-Assiniboine Memorial (Susan Baleja, Robin Campbell, Carey Kirby, Kristin Napier), Shannon Birchard (Nicole Sigvaldason, Sheyna Andries, Mariah Mondor), and Laura Burtnyk (Hailey Ryan, Jenny Greig, Rebecca Cormier).
