Team Kurz Wins Canada Games Gold

Curling has added a gold medal to Team Manitoba’s Canada Games medals count with a win Friday in the Men’s Final at the Canada Games in Prince George. Colin Kurz and his team, Ryan Lemoine, Weston Oryniak, Brendan Bilawka and Coach Tom Clasper defeated Ontario by a score of 9-2 in the final. They finished the event with a 7 wins - 1 loss record, completing the round robin with a 4-1 record before stringing together three playoff victories.

The Team Kurz Gold Medal is the fourth Canada Games Gold Medal for Manitoba in eleven Canada Games competitions. Greg Blanchard, with Kerry Burtnyk playing third, won Manitoba’s first Canada Games Gold Medal in 1979. John Boswick skipped the Canada Games Gold Medal team in 1987 and James Kirkness won the third Manitoba curling Gold in 1991.

The Kurz team is the second coached to a Gold Medal by Tom Clasper, who coached the Boswick foursome in 1987.

Team Manitoba will arrive home Saturday afternoon on Flight No. 9506. Arrival time 1245pm. The 'switch-over' takes place this weekend for the two week Canada Games event. Shae Bevan's Women's team begins competition Monday.

FRIDAY : Team Kurz to Play for Canada Games Gold - Manitoba's Canada Games medal count has increased by one, but yet to be determined if it is a gold or silver. Colin Kurz and his team won their morning semi-final, 6-5 over BC, stealing a deuce on the opening end and scoring two more on the 5th and 7th ends in a 6-5 victory. Team Kurz/Manitoba will play Ontario in the 5pm final after Ontario defeated Saskatchewan 9-5 in the other semifinal.

THURSDAY: Team Kurz to Play Canada Games Semi-Final -  Manitoba's Colin Kurz foursome won their quarter-final match, 9-4 over Prince Edward Island, to advance to a Friday semi-final against BC. In the other quarterfinal, Ontario defeated Nova Scotia 8-4 to advance to the other semifinal against Sakatchewan.                                         

WEDNESDAY: Team Kurz to Play Canada Games Quarter-Final - A 10-8 loss to Saskatchewan in their final round robin game has left Team Manitoba's Colin Kurz curling foursome with a 4-1 record and a date in a Thursday morning semifinal at the Canada Games in Prince George. Saskatchewan finished with a 5-0 record and earned the first place bye to the semi-final. Third place in the group went to Ontario with a 3-2 record.

Manitoba will play the winner of a tiebreaker between Alberta and Prince Edward Island who finished tied for third in the other pool with 2-3 records. If Manitoba wins they'll will advance to a semifinal against BC who topped the other pool with a 5-0 record. Saskatchewan will play the winner of the Ontario quarterfinal against Nova Scotia who finished 4-1.

The two quarterfinal games take place at noon (BC time) Thursday with semi-finals at 7pm and the final & brinze medal game Friday.

(Monday) Team Kurz Wins Opener at Canada Games: Team Manitoba's Men's Curling team plays during the first week of the Canada Games in Prince George, BC. The team, skipped by Colin Kurz, began play Sunday with a 10-2 win over Northwest Territories. In their grouping Manitoba, Newfoundland Labrador, Ontario and Saskatchewan all won a game on opening day. Territories and Quebec lost a pair of games.

Team Manitoba plays one game Monday (NL-4pm local), two on Tuesday (QC-10am local, ON-4pm local), and one Wedesday (SK-91m local).
