Jay Ross probably didn’t expect to be the highlight of the CurlManitoba Bonspiel Opening Ceremony but his attempt to win $50,000 in a draw to the button, sponsored by Nott Autocorp, had people standing up and cheering as his draw slip to a stop just past the button.  The near impossible shot, which requires the thrower to throw on new ice without practice, sweeping or a line call, must cover the black Nott Autocorp logo to be a winner.

The shot was near perfect, almost full in the back four foot and overcurled about an inch in that extra couple of feet.

Three curlers entered in the bonspiel were selected at random to attempt the shot. Also presented at the Opening ceremony was a trip for two to Las Vegas, another prize available to all participants. Rick Tober, skip of a team from Moosehorn CC, was the winner.

The Brazil national men’s curling team threw the bonspiel’s ceremonial opening rock. They and the other teams on the opening draw at the Fort Garry Curling Club were welcomed by club and association dignitaries along with Manitoba Minister of Sport Hon. Ron Lemieux. Mr. Lemieux, an admitted non-curler, acknowledged the significance of the bonspiel as a great sporting and community event with imporannt benefits to the community, including the opportunity for curlers to come together on friendship and competition. He commended CurlManitoba for its leadership in expanding the bonspiel beyond its traditional base as a men’s event to include juniors and women – opportunities to expand the reach of the ‘spiel and its benefits to the sport
