McDonald Wins Granite Ladies Spiel

Chudley Wins Brandon's Safeway Berth

Kristy McDonald and her Granite team (Kate Cameron, Raunora Westcott, Leslie Wilson) scored a five on the third end to pave the way to a 9-4 victory over Kerri Einarson-East St Paul (Selena Kaatz, Liz Fyfe, Kristin MacCuish) in the first Granite Ladies Cash Spiel. McDonald and her team had also won the Granite's fall cash bonspiel - the Mother Club Classic in September. McDonald defeated Jill Thurston-Granite 6-4 in the semi-final while Einarson was a 7-3 victor over Michelle Montford-Assiniboine Memorial. McDonald's champion's purse was $1,500 while Einarson earned $1,200.  Thurston and Montford teams each cashed $900 cheques and quarterfinalists Michelle Englot-SK and Janet Harvey-Assiniboine Memorial each picked up $750.

At Brandon, Kelly Marnoch-Carberry defeated Curtis McCannell in the final of the 124th Brandon Men's Bonspiel presented by  Branstone Financial Services. As both teams already had Safeway berths, a special playoff was required between semifinalists Jerry Chudley-Neepawa and Cale Dunbar-Brandon. The bonspiel's Safeway Berth was won by Chudley.

SUNDAY AM: Dauphin Teams Advance in Brandon - Dauphin teams skipped by Ray Baker and Greg Todoruk won their late Saturday C-Qualifiers to advance to the playoff round of the competitive division of the 124th Brandon Men's Bonspiel presented by  Branstone Financial Services. Baker (6-3 over Terry McNamee-Carberry) plays Kelly Marnoch-Carberry in the Sunday morning quarterfinal while Todoruk (7-5 over Randy McKean-Virden) plays Curtis McCannell-Pilot Mound. The Baker-Marnoch winner plays Cale Dunbar-Brandon and the Todoruk-McCannell winner meets Jerry Chudley-Neepawa in the semifinals.

Saturday Late: Brandon Men's, Granite Ladies Spiels Underway This Weekend - Four teams have qualified for the playoff round in the 124th Brandon Men's Bonspiel's Competitive Division. Two more will be determined on the late draw Saturday in the event which is presented this year by Branstone Financial Services. A-Qualifiers in the 12 team event are Jerry Chudley-Neepawa (Kevin Cooley, Brent McKee,Paul Robertson) and Cale Dunbar-Brandon (Sheldon Wittig, Travis Brooks, Kyle Sambrook). The two advanced to the playoff round by defeating Kelly Marnoch-Carberry and Curtis McCannell-Pilot Mound, the only two teams in the 'spiel which already have Safeway Championship berths. However, Marnoch (Bart Witherspoon-4th, Branden Jorgensen, Chris Cameron) and McCannell (Rob Van Deynze, Bill Thiessen, Jason Morrow) won the B-Qualifer games. In the C-Qualifer games late Saturday, Terry McNamee-Carberry played Ray Baker-Dauphin and Greg Todoruk-Dauphin played Randy McKean-Virden.

At the Granite Curling Club, in their first January Ladies Cash Bonspiel, six teams with positive round-robin records have advanced to the playoff round. Kerri Einarson-East St. Paul (Selena Kaatz, Liz Fyfe, Kristin MacCuish) was the only undefeated team in the bonspiel, winning all three of her preliminary games. Manitoba teams skipped by Michelle Montford, Jill Thurston, Kristy McDonald and Jill Thurston and Saskatchewan's Michelle Englot all advanced with 2-1 records. In the Saturday evening quarterfinals, McDonald defeated Englot (7-4) and Montford defeated Harvey (6-5), scoring two coming home for the win. At 10:30AM Sunday, Montford plays Einarson and McDonald meets Thurston.

Friday: Brandon Men's, Granite Ladies Spiels Underway This Weekend - The 124th Brandon Men's Bonspiel presented by Branstone Financial Services and a new competitive Ladies event at the Granite Curling Club in WInnipeg are underway this weekend.. The competitive division of the Brandon men's features a Safeway championship berth. Twelve teams entered the event. Two, Kelly Marnoch-Carberry and Curtis McCannell-Pilot Mound already have Safeway invitations. The berth final game will be played Sunday at 4pm at Brandon Curling Club.

The Granite Ladies event features many of the teams competing in the provincial Scotties as well as Michelle Englot's Saskatchewan team. The three draw playoff round begins with the quarterfinals on Saturday evening and finishes with draws at 10:30 and 3:30 on Sunday.
