Carruthers Loses Final in Blaine, MN: Grassie Wins at Deer Lodge

Reid Carruthers advanced to the final of the new U.S. Open of Curling in Blaine MN. Carruthers finished the round robin with a 6-3 loss to Jeff Stoughton but his 4-1 record was good enough to advance to the playoffs. Stoughton finished 3-2 and also reached the playoffs where, after a first round win over Trevor Bonot-NONT, Stoughton lost 8-6 on an extra end to Carruthers. Carruthers beat Adam Casey-PEI in a quarterfinal but lost to Steve Laycock-SK in the Sunday afternoon final when Carruthers last rock tapback attempt overcurled and gave Laycock a steal for a 6-5 victory.

At Deer Lodge, in the Deer Lodge Cash Spiel - Sean Grassie-Deer Lodge posted a 4-1 round robin record and earned a bye to the final with a last round victory over Justin Twiss-Granite. Twiss also had a 4-1 round robin record. He defeated Steen Sigurdson 5-2 in the semi-final to advance to the final. Grassie posted a 5-4 extra end victory to win the $1000 first prize.

SATURDAY: Carruthers Unbeaten in Blaine, MN - Reid Carruthers and his Manitoba team are the only undefeated team in the inaugural U.S. Open of Curling, underway in Blaine, Minnesota. Carruthers has defeated Scott Dunnam-Pennsylvania (9-2), Trevor Bonot - NONT (6-4), Brady Clark-Washington (5-3) and Craig Brown - USA/Blaine (7-1). To wrap up the round robin, at 5pm Saturday, Carruthers plays Jeff Stoughton whose record is 2-2 after wins over Clark & Dunnam and losses to Brown & Bonot.
