Calvert Foursome repeats as Canola Junior Men's Champion

Team Braden Calvert-Deer Lodge CC defeated Team Matt Dunstone-Granite CC 7-6 in the final of the Canola Junior Men's Provincial Championship. Team Calvert consists of Skip Braden Calvert, Third Kyle Kurz, Second Lucas Van Den Bosch, Lead Brendan Wilson, and Coach Lynn Fallis-Kurz. Team Calvert earned their way to the final by winning the semifinal against Team Cole Peters-Granite CC. Team Calvert will represent Manitoba for the second consecutive year at the 2015 M&M Meat Shops Canadian Juniors in Corner Brook, NL January 24-February 1, 2015.

In the re-match of last year's Canola Junior Men's final game, 2013 champion Dunstone took early control, leading by three after three ends. Dunstone's 3 point lead held up through seven ends but a Calvert single followed by steals of two on the ninth and another on the tenth end gave the defending champion a 7-6 win and return trip to the national championship.

Dunstone-Calvert Re-Match in Canola Junior Men's Final - In a re-match of the 2014 Canola Junior Men's final game, and of the morning Page 1-1 Playoff game, Matt Dunstone-Granite will play Braden Calvert-Deer Lodge for the Manitoba title and what will be, for one of them a return trip to the Canadian Championship.

Dunstone won the morning 1-1 matchup with a last rock tap back facing two. Calvert defeated Cole Peters-Granite 10-5 in the after noon semifinal.

Dunstone Win 1-1; Peters-Calvert Canola Junior Men's Semifinal - In a rare meeting of the past two Canadian Junior Men's champions at a provincial championship, Matt Dunstone-Granite (2013 champion) needed a last shot tapback facing a pair to score a single and post a 7-6 win over Braden Calvert (2014 champion) Wednesday morning. Dunstone advances to the 4pm final while Calvert will play the semifinal against Cole Peters-Granite. Peters bested Heather's Hayden Forrester 7-5 in the Page 2-2 playoff game.

Calvert Undefeated, Forrester Also Advances to Playoffs in Canola Junior Men's - Defending champion Braden Calvert-Deer Lodge and his team improved their record to a perfect 7-0 with an 8-2 win over Jordan Smith-Granite. Calvert advances to the Page 1-1 game against Matt Dunstone-Granite who finished first in the other group. Hayden Forrester-Heather (9-3 victory over Devon Wiebe-Portage) finishes alone in second place in the group and advances to the Page 2- playoff game against Cole Peters-Granite. Dunstone, Peters and Forrester all finished 6-1 in their round robins.

In other last round games, Austin Mustard-Carberry improved to 3-4 with an 11-3 win over Chad Sahulka-Winnipegosis and Sean Davidson-Portage also improved to 3-4 with a 7-4 win over Erik Rafnson-East St Paul.

Dunstone, Peters Advance to Playoffs in Canola Junior Men's - Final standings in the Canola Junior Men's 'Asham" group were determined in  a pair of extra end games Tuesday morning. Matt Dunstone-Granite lost 8-7 to Colin Kurz when Kurz drew to the edge of the four foot with his last rock facing two Dunstone counters. A few sheets over, Cole Peters-Granite also made a last rock draw facing a pair to beat JT Ryan-Assiniboine Memorial by the same 8-7 score. The results mean Dunstone and Peters both finish at 6-1 but Dunstone is awarded first place and a spot in the Page 1-1 playoff game thanks to a round robin victory Monday over Peters. Ryan and Kurz finish in a tie for third place in the group with 5-2 records.

In their final games of the event, Carter Watkins-Swan River won a third game in a row (7-6 over Nathaniel Swanson) to finish 3-4 while Swanson finishes at 2-5. Quinn Robins-Rivers defeated Braden Magura-Springfield 7-4 in the last game match-up of winless teams.

Due to a required double tiebreak draw on Tuesday evening on the women's side of the competition, all playoff games will be played on Wednesday with games scheduled for 8:30AM, 12:15PM and 4PM.

Second and third seeds Matt Dunstone-Granite and Cole Peters-Granite met on the late draw Monday. Both were undefeated going into the game which was won 7-3 by Team Dunstone. With a 6-0 record, Dunstone is assured of the first place playoff berth from the group.

At 5-1, Peters can confirm his team’s spot in the playoff round by winning a second place showdown with JT Ryan-Assiniboine Memorial in the final round robin game Tuesday morning. Ryan posted a 9-5 victory over Colin Kurz-Granite late Monday and also has a 5-1 record. Dunstone plays Kurz on the final round robin draw Tuesday morning but has locked up first place in the group thanks to round robin wins over both Peters and Ryan.

In other games on the late draw, Nathaniel Swanson-Heather (8-6 over Quinn Robins-Rivers) and Carter Watkins-Swan RIver (10-7 over Braden Magura-Springfield) both posted their second victories of the day.

Calvert Locks Up First Place in Group at Canola Junior Men's - Defending Manitoba and Canadian Junior Men’s champion Braden Calvert team from Deer Lodge Curling Club has improved their record to a perfect 6-0 record and assured themselves of first place in the Canola Junior Men’s “Extreme Force” group with one game yet to play. Team Calvert defeated Hayden Forrester-Heather 8-2 on the late afternoon draw Monday.

The Forrester team’s loss drops their record to 5-1 and they have their playoff destiny in their own hands as they play Devon Wiebe-Portage in their final round-robin game at noon Tuesday at Assiniboine Memorial. Wiebe’s record is 4-2 after their sixth round game Monday, a 6-5 extra end loss to Jordan Smith-Granite.

A Forrester win over Wiebe will improve the Heather team’s record to 6-1 and earn the second place playoff berth from this competition group. Even if Team Calvert loses their final game – to Team Smith – the defending champions will be awarded first place in the group based on round-robin victories over both the Forrester foursome.

If Wiebe defeats Forrester, the two teams will have 5-2 records and will play a tiebreaker for second place. If Smith also beats Calvert, there will be a three way tie for second place in the group and an extra tiebreaker draw will be required.

In other sixth round games, Austin Mustard-Carberry (9-1 over Erik Rafnson-East St Paul) and Sean Davidson-Portage (11-3 over Chad Sahulka-Winnipegosis) both improved their records to 2-4.

Dunstone-Peters Play for First Place on Late Draw Monday - Wins by Matt Dunstone-Granite (7-3 over JT Ryan-Assiniboine Memorial) and Cole Peters-Granite (7-4 over Colin Kurz-Granite) have given the the two Granite teams 5-0 records and a hold "for the moment" on the two playoff berths from the competition group which played the Canola Junior Men's 12:15pm draw at Assiniboine Memorial. They will face-off for first place on the late draw Monday.  Ryan and Kurz suffered their first losses and their 4-1 record means their late draw game will be critical to their playoff aspirations. In other games, on the 12:15 draw, Nathaniel Swanson-Heather (10-6 over Braden Magura-Springfield) and Carter Watkins-Swan River (5-4 over Quinn Robins-Rivers) picked up their first victories of the event.
