Montford Wins MCT Women's Championship, Ursel-Harvey-McDonald Earn Scotties Entries

Sunday Dec 14 2014

Michelle Montford and her Assiniboine Memorial team (Lisa DeRiviere, Sara Van Walleghem, Sara Neufeld-pictured with AMCC Manager Paul Batchelor) went undefeated through the Women’s Manitoba Curling Tour Championship presented by Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries, defeating clubmate Barb Spencer (Katie Spencer, Holly Spencer, Sydney Arnal) 5-2 in the final.

When both Montford and Spencer advanced unbeaten to the final game, the host Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club was assured of a double winner as David Bohn and his team had won the men’s title earlier in the day for Assiniboine Memorial.

As the finalists were both already qualified for the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, the three Scotties berth invitations had already been awarded earlier in the day. The first berth assigned went to Kristy McDonald and her Granite team who held down the top spot on the MCT Women’s Rankings before the event. Janet Harvey-Assiniboine Memorial earned the second rankings berth by qualifying for the playoff round in the championship.

The third berth was up for grabs in the quarterfinal playoff round. Harvey lost to Kristy Watling-East St Paul (6-2) but Watling’s junior team was ineligible due to age, and the other two semifinalists, Spencer & Montford, did not need the invitation to the Scottie in Winkler.

That meant the spotlight was on Darcy Robertson-Fort Rouge and Terry Ursel-Lansdowne. Ursel won that quarterfinal (8-7) with a last rock draw to the edge of the button on an extra end and picked up the berth awarded to the ‘highest finishing eligible team’.

In the semifinals, Ursel lost to Spencer (9-3) and Watling lost to Montford (6-2).

In addition to the available Scotties berth invitations, the champion Montford team pocketed $1,600; Spencer earned $1,200; semifinalists Ursel and Watling cashed cheques for $1,000; and qualifying was worth $800 to Robertson and Harvey.

In addition to the valued support of Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries, the Manitoba Curling Tour expresses appreciation to Asham Curling Supplies, CurlManitoba, ReMax professionals Gord & Kristi Green, Best Western Plus Winnipeg West, and Shaw TV.
