As the final day of play begins at the Manitoba Curling Tour Championships presented by Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries, the recipients of only two of eight provincial championship berths have yet to be determined. Determining those final two provincial entries makes for an interesting day of competition at Assiniboine Memorial.

Pending confirmation of team eligibility by CurlManitoba, on the Men’s side Sean Grassie-Deer Lodge, Scott Ramsay-Granite, Daley Peters-West Kildonan, and Jared Kolomaya-Stonewall have all qualified for berth invitations. The fifth men’s berth will be earned by David Bohn-Assiniboine Memorial, who must win a Sunday morning semi-final. If Bohn falls short, the fifth and final Safeway Championship invitation will go to Steve Irwin’s Brandon foursome. Irwin’s team currently ranks #5 on the MCT rankings and, as the ‘on the bubble’ team, will be watching the results of the Bohn-Daley Peters semi-final with extra interest.

The 9:30AM semi-finals have Grassie playing Peters and Bohn against Matt Dunstone, who already has a Safeway championship invitation. The final is at 1PM (telecast on Shaw TV and WCG-Westman at 5PM)

Despite competing at the Canadian Open in Yorkton, on the Women’s side of the event Kristy McDonald and her Granite foursome cannot be surpassed at the top of the Women’s Rankings. Team McDonald has earned the first Women’s Rankings berth invitation. Janet Harvey’s Assiniboine Memorial team will also go home from the MCT Championship at their home-club with a Scotties berth invitation in hand –either as the event’s champion or as the next highest ranked team over the season. Results of the Sunday playoffs will determine the recipient of the MCT’s  third Scotties invitation.

Depending on which results scenario unfolds Sunday at the championship, three teams are still in contention for that final invitation. Colleen Kilgallen-Roland is on the sidelines watching with interest. Terry Ursel-Lansdowne and Darcy Robertson-Fort Rouge meet in a semi-final game at 9:30AM Sunday with the winner advancing against top seed Barb Spencer-Assiniboine Memorial. If the Ursel-Robertson winner advances to the final, the berth will go to that team. If Spencer, Kilgallen’s season-long ranking is sufficient to earn her team the provincial spot.

In addition to the Ursel-Robertson match, the 9:30AM quarterfinals feature a game Harvey and between Kristy Watling’s East St Paul junior team, who are not eligible to advance to the Scotties due to age. IN the 1:30PM semifinals while the winner between Ursel and Robertson is playing Spencer, the winner between Harvey and  Watling will take on Michelle Montford. Spencer and Montford already own invitations to compete in the provincial Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Winkler. The women’s final is scheduled for 4:30PM (telecast on Shaw & WCG immediately following the men’s game).

The Sigurdson-Peters match-up featured a pair of teams still looking for a Safeway berth and hoping to avoid the Regional playoffs next weekend. Peters advances to the Sunday playoff round while Sigurdson drops to a B-Qualifier against William Lyburn who already hold a Safeway berth invitation.

The third B-Qualifier on the 12:15 Saturday draw features Jared Kolomaya-Stonewall vs Scott Ramsay-Granite.

The 12-team Women’s MCT Championship has also advanced to the A-Qualifier stage. At 9AM Saturday, Barb Spencer-Assiniboine Memorial (Katie & Holly Spencer, Sydney Arnal) plays Kim Link-East St Paul (Karen Fallis, Angela Wickman, Renee Fletcher) and Michelle Montford-Assiniboine Memorial (lisa DeRiviere, Sara Van Walleghem, Sarah Neufeld) plays Colleen Kilgallen-Roland (Susan Baleja, Janice Blair, Kendra Georges). Montford and Spencer have already earned Scotties Championship invitations. Kilgallen and Link are still chasing one.
