McLean Wins Neil Andrews Legends Classic

For the second year in a row, unheralded Rob McLean of Brandon swept through to the final of the Neil Andrews Legends Classic Bonspiel. After losing last year's final 9-1 to Reg Malanchuk, this year mcLean, Lory Saban, Joe McDougall, and Grant McMullan took home the championship prize of $3,000 with a 5-3 win over clubmate Jim Renwick. McLean and Renwick had both advanced undefeated to the final, aftyer being the only teams in the 20-team event to go undefeated in round-robin play. Each won $500 in per-win money for four victories. Renwick's finalist share was $1,500.

The two Brandon teams were among four from the host club who made the playoff round. McLean beat Brian Fowler (9-8 extra end) in the quarter-finals while Clare DeBlonde beat Gil Van Daele (6-5). McLean then defeated DeBlonde-Ft Rouge (7-2) in the semi-final.

In their quarter-final, Renwick defeated Provincial Senior men's champion Brent Strachan-Hamiota (6-4) and then beat Mark Franklin-Ft Rouge (6-5) in the semis. Franklin had beaten Murray Warren-Deloraine (6-5) in their quarter-final game.
