2nd Annual DEKALB SuperSpiel set for March 11-15, 2010 in Morris

by Committee Release

Following a consultation with participating teams, the Morris Curling Club`s DEKALB SuperSpiel committee has announced the dates for the second annual event, March 11-15, 2010.    The dates place the Morris event a full week ahead of the Ford World Women`s Championship in Swift Current, SK. and represent a change forward by a week on the calendar.

The decision to change dates was recommended by event chair Lorne Hamblin based on indications that several international teams travelling to Swift Current will be interested in coming to Canada early. An opportunity to compete in a top-flight bonspiel will be an important part of the acclimatization and preparation for the world teams. Given that potential level of competition, it is expected a stronger field of Canadian and Manitoba women`s teams will also participate in this season’s DEKALB SuperSpiel..

The bonspiel was established in 2009 and attracted a strong first-year field, including several women’s and men’s teams who used it as a last-chance opportunity to gain entry into the Canadian Olympic Trials process. The parallel Men`s bonspiel included the Chinese National team en route to the Ford Worlds in Moncton.
For the future, it is the intent of the DEKALB SuperSpiel committee to establish a pattern of timing the week before both the Men`s and Women`s Worlds in Canada. As the two  championships alternate year to year with the Men`s championship two weeks later, the DEKALB SuperSpiel will also be two weeks later in alternate years.

The change of dates was confirmed at a DEKALB SuperSpiel committee meeting last week in Morris. It marked the final meeting for Hamblin as the committee chair. Having accepted a position, with his wife Chris, as co-National Coach for the Swiss Curling Association, Hamblin has stepped down as chairman of the bonspiel he helped establish.

Former committee Secretary Barb Stevenson and Morris Curling Club President Brian Recksiedler will act as co-chairs of the 2nd Annual DEKALB SuperSpiel. Hamblin will continue as a long-distance advisor to the committee.

While many teams have already confirmed plans to be in Morris for the March 11-15 bonspiel, those who are just now finalizing plans for the upcoming season may contact Brian Recksiedler ([email protected]) OR Resby Coutts ([email protected]) for event information.
