Swan Lake Skip Included among 2008-09 MHSAA Athletes of the Year

thecurler.com Congratulates MHSAA`s SUPER-8

The Manitoba High Schools Athletic Association, with support from Jostens and Super 8, recently announced the "Super 8-Super 8" male and female High School Athletes of the Year in each of the four school classifications.  Each of the winners will receive a watch courtesy of Super 8 Motels in Manitoba.  The Manitoba Jostens male and female High School Athletes of the Year are selected from the Super 8 winners. 

The four female winners among the 2008-2009 "Super 8 - Super 8":
The girls "A" athlete of the year is Amanda Gundrum of Westmount School in Swan Lake.  Amanda participates in Volleyball, Basketball, Badminton, Fastball, Track, Curling and Golf.  She skipped her Westmount Warriors team to a 2 wins - 2 losses record at the 2009 MHSAA Championship in Carberry. She was selected All Star and Most Valuable Player at a number of Basketball and Volleyball tournaments throughout the year.  She was Captain of her Basketball and Volleyball teams.  Amanda maintains a 93% average; finds time to be involved in Student Council, 4-H and the school food drive.  She captured three individual Gold Medals at the Rural Provincial Track and Field Championships, and another three at the "Milk" Provincial Championship.
 
Julie Paradine of Major Pratt School in Russell, is the "AA" Athlete of the Year.  Julie participated in Volleyball, Basketball, Badminton and Fastball and was selected as the Most Valuable Player at the "AA" Girls High School Volleyball Championship, which her team captured as well as an All Star at the Provincial Basketball Championships.  She was a member of the graduating All Star in both sports and was Zone 10 singles Badminton Champion.  She pitched for Major Pratt in the Provincial Fastball Championships and was selected as an All Star.  Julie also contributes to Student Council and is Co-Editor of the School Year Book while also being an active member in the schools drama production.
 
Jenessa Karlowsky of Sanford Collegiate is the "AAA" recipient.  She participates in Cross Country Running, Volleyball, Basketball and Track and Field, and was selected to the graduating All Star Teams in both team sports and received a number of MVP and All Star honors throughout the year.  She had many outstanding performances in the Zone 4 Track Meet including first in long jump and second in hurdles and 800 meters.  Janessa also participates in other sports including Beach Volleyball, Dragon Boat Team, and Athletic Council while organizing a Volleyball Tournament that helped raise money for Cancer Research. 
 
The "AAAA" Athlete of the Year is Kristine Johnson of Kelvin High School. Kristine was Assistant Captain of the Hockey Team and Co-Captain of the Volleyball Team.  She was ranked as the number five Volleyball Player in the Province, and is a graduating All Star in Volleyball and a League All Star in Hockey.  She is also on the Grad and Mentorship Committee at Kelvin.  Kristine was recognized with a number of Hockey Scholarships this year including the Alexander Josephson Award and Winnipeg Jet's Alumni and Friends scholarship.

The four male winners among the 2008-2009 "Super 8 - Super 8":
Jordan Hurton of Treherne Collegiate is the "A" male athlete of the year.  Hurton participated in Volleyball, Basketball, Badminton and Track and Field and was the Most Valuable Player, and Players Choice Award at the Provincial "A"  Volleyball Championships, which his team captured, and was a member of the Volleyball graduating All Star team.  He was also selected as an All Star at the Provincial "A" Basketball Championships, which his Tigers also won.  Most recently he was chosen as a Credit Union Scholar/Athlete Award winner.  In addition, Jordan is Student Council President, sits on the Grad Committee, choir and many other school committees.
 
Bobby Neufeld of Goose Lake High School, in Roblin, is the "AA" male athlete of the year.  Bobby participates in Golf, Volleyball, Basketball, Baseball and Track.  He was selected as the Most Valuable Player at both the Provincial "AA" Volleyball and Basketball Championships, en-route to gold medals at both.  He was selected to numerous tournament All Star teams in both sports and is Student Council Co-President and referees elementary school basketball.  Bobby was selected "AA" Basketball Player of the Year by the Coaches Association for the second consecutive year, and was the starting pitcher for his high school baseball team.  He also maintains a 90% average while keeping busy with school and community activities.  He is a certified Volleyball and Softball official.

 Michael Pankratz of Westgate Mennonite Collegiate is the "AAA" male high school athlete of the year.  Michael participates in Golf, Volleyball, Basketball and Badminton and was a MHSAA athlete of the week, an "AAA" Volleyball All Star and member of the Graduating All Star team.  In basketball, he earned numerous MVP and All Star Awards and was Most Valuable Player at the "AAA" Championships, which his team won, and was a member of the All Manitoba team.  Michael maintains an 89% average and is secretary on the Student Council, member of the concert choir, and concert band. 
The "AAAA" High School Athlete of the year is Jordan Kussin of Kelvin High School.  Jordon participates in Golf, Basketball, Football, Indoor, and Outdoor Track and Field.   He was basketball captain and selected Most Valuable Player and All Star in a number of tournaments.  He participated in the Football Senior Bowl and qualified in the 100-meter, 200 meter and 4 x 100 relay at Provincials.  He was co-captain of the golf team at Kelvin as well.  He is also a grade 9 mentor and has begun to teach basketball at the Rady center in his free time.

Each of the "Super 8-Super 8" will receive a watch courtesy of Super 8 Hotels.

The 2009 Jostens MHSAA Athletes of the Year are Julie Paradine of Major Pratt School in Russell and Bobby Neufeld of Goose Lake High School in Roblin, Manitoba.
 
They will each receive an attractive ring from Jostens.
