Hustler & Lawless are Enjoyable Radio

Friday Jun 19 2009

My sons are amazed that I can recall the 'real' days of radio – before TV. Sometimes they are amazed that I have adjusted not too bad to the computer and the internet – and are even more amazed that I actually am on Twitter.

But I am a radio guy – no doubt about it. I love Paul Edmonds and his Goldeyes broadcast and yeah, I get my biggest ego-boost out of my own radio show (RockTalk – CFRW Monday evenings in the winter).

So it was a pleasure last night to watch Hustler & Lawless in action at the Upper Deck Sports Bar at McPhillips Street Station. I was there with Rick Brownlee (Mr. Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame) . We had finished a volunteer shift working a bingo on behalf of the Hall of Fame and decided to check out Hustler & Lawless upstairs.

Last night’s guests were Bomber QB hopeful James Killian – an impressively well-spoken young man AND former star Paul Bennett who is chairing the Hall of Fame game in Winnipeg later this summer. We spent an enjoyable hour listening to the four of them.

The reason for writing this comes from the fact these guys have jumped to the big-time with two hours of Sports Talk every weekday evening on CJOB. They’re great fun and great listening for a sports fan.

I suggest it is also good news for curling. I know how it is to plan an hour a week – I suggest they’ll find planning two hours a day is going to create a lot of opportunities for a lot of sports. And on behalf of curling fans, I want to be the first to suggest we’d love to hear Stoughton, Burtnyk, McEwen, Jones or any of a bunch of Manitoba’s curling stars on the show during the winter.

Among the Hall of Fame volunteers last evening was Lawless’ Free Press colleague Ashley Press. She updated me on the health status of Assistant Sports Editor Chris Cariou. He’s been off work for a while and is recovering slowly. Sounds like there’s progress but not quick and he’ll be off work for quite a while yet.

I’ll presume to speak on behalf of the curling community when I send this message to Chris that our thoughts are with him and we wish him well in his recovery.
