Dutiaume Headliner in TD Canada Trust Cash League
Tuesday Oct 07 2008Former Manitoba champion Randy Dutiaume would have to be considered the “headliner” in the newest competitive curling show in town – the TD Canada Trust Cash League which kicked off Tuesday, October 7 at the West Kildonan Curling Club.
The 12-team league features many of the top Winnipeg competitive men’s teams plus a few aspiring foursomes.
Dutiaume’s opener was a close game for six ends. With a couple of early bonspiels under their belt, Dutiaume was still challenged by Craig Strand, playing his first game of the year. Leading by one playing the seventh end, Dutiaume made a draw through a narrow port which sweepers Chris Suchy and Greg Melnichuk were able to drag to the eight foot. A measure gave them a deuce and a three point lead coming home.
Other winners on the opening draw were Andrew Wickman, William Kuran, Reid Carruthers and Doug Riach.
Other well known names in the league include Mixed champion Sean Grassie , former MCA Bonspiel Aggregate winner Brad Haight and Bryce McEwen.
Less well-known but still capable teams skipped by Brian Melnyk, Ross Rybak, and Greg Mikolajek round out the league. Mikolajek’s team will be remembered as the team that gained reciognition as the Dean Nero team in last year’s MCA Men’s Bonspiel. Mikolajek was in fact the skip of that team. Nero is a member of the team this year as well.
The TD Canada Trust Cash League plays Tuesdays at 5:45pm at West Kildonan. Two teams will have a bye each week.
