Manitoba Curling’s ‘Big Three’ Join Forces

Wednesday Jul 09 2008

Monsanto “Sliding in Summer” Bonspiel, Warren, August 19-24

For what is believed to be the first time ever, the “Big Three’ of Manitoba curling will curl together on the same team during the inaugural Monsanto ‘Sliding in Summer’ Bonspiel at Warren, Manitoba. The bonspiel is scheduled from August 19-24, 2008.

Defending Manitoba champion and 1995 world champion Kerry Burtnyk will join forces with 1996 world champion Jeff Stoughton and 1992 Canadian Champion Vic Peters for a special one-game appearance. Their opposition in an August 21st ‘demonstration challenge game’ will be provided by Manitoba’s Wheelchair champion Chris Sobkowicz team, winners of the Bronze Medal at the 2008 Canadian Wheelchair championship.

Burtnyk, Stoughton, and Peters will be the ‘front three’ for a celebrity skip or skips whose identity will be announced at a later date.

With a reminder that the line-up of three of Manitoban’s all-time greats, includes two World Championships, five Canadian Men’s Championships and 14 Provincial Men’s Championships, Bonspiel Co-Chair Cal Surgenor says it is a ‘dream line-up for those yet-to-be-named celebrity skips’. With a smile, Surgenor also suggests it will be interesting to watch the ‘Big Three’ ‘struggle with an unfamiliar part of the game – sweeping”.

Surgenor also adds their entire organizing committee is extremely pleased and proud that these 3 “Icons” of Canadian Curling have agreed to give of themselves and help to bring more attention to wheelchair curling. Part of the proceeds/funds raised from this game will be given directly to help support development of handicapped curling in the Province of Manitoba. Without the incredible generosity of Burtnyk, Peters, & Stoughton this would not be possible.

Monsanto Canada’s Public Relations Director Trish Jordan says the company is pleased to be able to extend its already extensive support of curling to help support and create awareness for Canada’s disabled curlers. “It is a privilege for Monsanto to be part of an event that brings able-bodied and wheelchair competitors together and of course, it is a special thrill to be a part of a game where the Wheelchair champions have a chance to play some of Manitoba’s greatest champions,” Jordan says. “We really are at our limit in terms of support for curling but this event was truly unique and obviously it is for a very worthy cause so we decided to lend the local organizers a hand.”

The Sobkowicz vs Burtnyk/Stoughton/Peters game will be played at 7pm Thursday, August 21 in the Warren Arena, where all of the games of the bonspiel’s competitive and recreational divisions will be played.

Sobkowicz and his Wheelchair champions are entered in the Warren Summer Bonspiel’s Recreational Division as the first step in their preparations to defend their title this year.

“Our goal this year is to play as many games against able bodied teams, provide awareness to the curling public, and of course become better curlers,” Sobkowicz says.

The first ever Monsanto ‘Sliding in Summer’ Bonspiel in Warren, Manitoba will feature both a competitive and a recreational division. The August 19th – 24th event will include 24 teams in each division.

The competitive division has a guaranteed total purse of $10,000.00 (based on a full entry of 24 teams). The recreational division will have a “pay per win” format. Both divisions are ‘open entry’ and will accept Men’s teams, Women’s teams or foursomes with any combination of Men and Women.

Surgenor reports confirmed entries to date include “known” provincial competitors Chelsea Carey, Kristy Jenion, Daley Peters, Karen Porrit, Chris Galbraith, and Richard Muntain. In addition to these and several other entries in the competitive division, Surgenor reports there has been strong interest in the recreational division as well.

However, there is still room for more entries on a first-come, first-served basis.

The recreational division starts on Tuesday, August 19th and the competitive division starts on Wednesday, August 20th. All draws starting August 20th will feature teams from both divisions. All games will be played in the 2-year old Warren Arena on ice prepared by Ice Technician Greg Ewasko, recognized as one of Manitoba’s leading icemakers.

“It’s a great chance for some of the recreational curlers to play on arena ice and to be on the ice at the same time as our competitive teams, adding the feel and the excitement of ‘high level curling’ to their game,” Surgenor says.

In the best traditions of summer bonspiels everywhere, the Monsanto ‘Sliding in Summer’ Bonspiel will have a strong social and entertainment component.

There will be a Beer Gardens on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, & Sunday with Live Entertainment on both Friday and Saturday evening. QX 104 will be broadcasting, live from the event on Saturday, Aug. 23rd, with host Karen Black in attendance. Karen will also “M.C.” the event on Saturday evening in the outdoor tent.

Bonspiel organizers on confident they will fill the openings available in both divisions well in advance of the event. For more information, visit the bonspiel website @
