Burtnyk Names ’08-’09 Line-Up

Wednesday May 07 2008

Kerry Burtnyk has finally confirmed what has been talked about for the past couple of weeks.

Albertan Don Walchuk will play third for Burtnyk in the upcoming curling seasons as Burtnyk attempts to fulfill the final dream in his illustrious curling career – win a trip to the Olympics.

Burtnyk (pictured with second Richard Daneault, Lauren Sabeski, JELD-WEN Windows and Doors, and (r) Mark Hofer, President-Direct Focus Marketing) made the announcement at a May 7 news conference.Communications Inc

He also confirmed that Rob Meakin’s leg injury is, in fact, career ending and that Garth Smith will be the team’s lead into as they pursue the Olympic dream.

With Smith and Daneault, the team is eligible and will compete as defending champion at the 2009 Safeway Provincial Championship in Selkirk. Initial indications are that Walchuk has no intention of moving to Manitoba. Burtnyk says they will now consult with the Manitoba Curling Association in regard to the issue of residency. If necessary, he will recruit an alternate for the provincial playdown process.

Without Meakin, the team is not eligible to compete in the Pre-Trials playoff that the team earned a spot in over the past winter.

The CCA will be asked formally to consider a medical exemption for Smith to assume Meakin’s spot on the team in the Pre-Trials event. Burtnyk says there have been no assurances given in this regard but says he thinks it is a reasonable thing for the CCA to have a medical exemption clause for pregnancies in the case of women competitors or season-ending injuries in the case of both men and women.
