Samagalski Wins Chicken Chef Mixed

Derek Samagalski's  Gimli CC team defeated Team Braden Calvert-Fort Rouge CC 3-2 in the final of the Chicken Chef Mixed Provincial Championship at the Neepawa Curling Club Sunday evening. Team Samagalski includes third Kerri Einarson, second Kyle Einarson, and lead Jenn Clark-Rouire. Team Samagalski will have the opportunity to represent Manitoba at the 2017 Canadian Mixed Championships November 12-19, 2016 in Yarmouth, NS.

It is the second Mixed championship in three years for Kerri & Kyle Einarson and Jennifer Clark-Rouire, who won in 2014 with Jared Kolomaya as skip.

Samagalski-Calvert Final in Neepawa - Every player on the ice in the Chicken Chef Mixed final in Neepawa is trying to win at least his/her second Manitoba championship buffalo crest. Derek Samagalski-Gimli (6-2 over Corey Chambers-East St Paul) is playing Braden Calvert-Fort Rouge (6-4 over Kyle Doering-Fort Rouge).

Samagalski, who was a 2015 Brier rep with Reid Carruthers, is skipping the 2014 Manitoba Mixed champion team of Kerri & Kyle Einarson and Jennifer Clark-Rouire. Kerri Einarson, of course skipped the 2016 Manitoba Scotties reps. Meanwhile, two time Manitoba junior men's champion Calvert is sided by his twice champion teammate Kyle Kurz and 2015 Manitoba junior women's champions Beth Peterson and Melissa Gordon.

Chicken Chef Mixed Playoffs Underway in Neepawa - A-Qualifiers Corey Chambers-East St Paul and Kyle Doering-Fort Rouge await the winners of early afternoon quarter-final games featuring Derek Samagalski-Gimli vs Sean Grassie-Deer Lodge and Braden Calvert-Fort Rouge vs Jeff Stewart-Neepawa. Samagalski was a late Saturday B-Qualifier with a 5-1 win over clubmate Alex Forrest while Calvert advanced on the same draw, beating Grassie 6-4.

Stewart qualified through the C-Event with a late Saturday win (4-3 over Lee Robins-Brandon) and an early Sunday win (8-3 over Forrest). After losing Saturday evening to Calvert, Grassie bounced back Sunday morning to oust defending champion Bob Sigurdson-Granite (6-2). 

In the 4:30 semi-finals Chambers will play the Samagalski vs Grassie winner with Doering meeting the Calvert-Stewart victor.

Chambers, -Doering A-Qualifiers in Neepawa - The first four teams were eliminated from the triple knockout Chicken Chef Mixed in Neepawa on the early draw Saturday. Ray Baker-Dauphin (5-4 over Grant Brown-Burntwood), Colin Grenkow-Pembina (7-4 over Shayne Macgranachan-Brandon), Kelly Marnoch-Carberry (5-4 over Jerry Chudley-Neepawa) and Jeff Stewart-Neepawa (8-3 over Kelly Lauber-Pembina) all stayed alive in the C-Event. At noon, Baker and Stewart advanced another step with wins. Baker defeated Grenkow (7-4) and Stewart beat Marnoch (7-1).

In the B-Event at 4:30pm Saturday, Alex Forrest-East St. Paul meets defending champion Bob Sigurdson-Granite while Braden Calvert-Fort Rouge plays Lee Robins-Brandon with losers dropping to the C-Event.

In A-Qualifier games on the Saturday noon draw, Derek Samagalski-East St Paul, lost (5-2) to Corey Chambers-East St Paul and former Manitoba Mixed Champion Sean Grassie-Deer Lodge lost (5-1) to Kyle Doering-Fort Rouge. While the winners advance to the playoff round, the Grassie drops into the Robins/Calvert section of the B-Event draw while the Samagalski drops in against Sigurdson/Forrest.

Chicken Chef Mixed Begins Friday in Neepawa - Former champion teams have been named the top two seeds in Manitoba's Chicken Chef Mixed Championship which gets underway Friday morning in Neepawa. Defending champion Bob Sigurdson (Erika Sigurdson, Al Purdy, Lindsay Baldock) has been ranked #2 by the teams, behind the 2014 champion team of Kerri Einarson, Kyle Einarson, and Jennifer Clark-Rouire who have 2015 Men's champion Derek Samagalski skipping. The team played with Jared Kolomaya in their championship year.

The rest of the top five seeds are Alex Forrest (Sabrina Neufeld, Connor Njegovan, D'Arcy Maywood), Braden Calvert (Beth Peterson, Kyle Kurz, Melissa Gordon) and Corey Chambers (Lisa DeRiviere, Ian McMillan, Jolene Rutter).
