Fort Rouge Sweep: Wickman, Andries Win Manitoba Travelers

Sunday Mar 13 2016

Fort Rouge teams skipped by Andrew Wickman and Tracy Andries have won the Manitoba Travelers Curling Club championships at St. Vital. Wickman's win defends the title won a year ago by Tyler Drews and his Fort Rouge team, the first team from the club to win the event. Andries and her entire team won the provincial event in 2014.

Wickman (Jeff Tarko, Mark Blanchard, Cam Barth) scored a pair of three ended en route to an 8-3 final game victory over Doug Jordan-Portage (Greg Jordan, Tom Henry, Daryl St. Goddard).

In the women's event, Andries (Crystal Kennedy, Diane Christensen, April Klassen) was up 3 after 3 ends and led Stacey Fordyce- Brandon (Christy Erickson, Stacey Irwin, Pam Gouldie) by 2 coming home. Fordyce made a clutch draw to the four foot to score the two and force an extra end.

The extra end went Fordyce's way until Andries third Crystal Kennedy made a double raise takeout of a Fordyce stone buried in the four foot circle. Facing one with her last stone, Fordyce was just heavy - leaving Andries a single point and a 5-4 victory.

The Fort Rouge teams will represent Manitoba at the national championship in Kelowna in November. Manitoba has previously won the national women's twice - Fordyce in 2013 and Meaghan Armit-Granite in 2011. Manitoba has not yet won the men's title at the national Travelers, which was previously sponsored by Dominion Insurance.
