Franklin, Malanchuk Win Manitoba's Credit Unions Masters Championships

The two winners of the Page 1-1 PLayoff games have won the Manitoba's Credit Unions Masters Championships. Pat Malanchuk-St Vital and Mark Franklin-Granite will represent Manitoba at the 2016 Canadian Master Championships.              

Two-time defending champion Pat Malanchuk and her team from the St.Vital Curling Club (Karen Sheldon, Nancy Scammell and Ruth Wiebe) defeated Rita VandeVyvere and her team from the Fort Rouge Curling Club (Bonnie Jakilazik, Deb Popovic and Clarice Fitzpatrick) 8-3. VandeVyvere had defeated former champion Joyce McDougall-Brandon (8-5) in the semi-final.

Mark Franklin and his team from the Granite Curling Club (Brent McCannell, Darryl Gunnlaugson, Terry Aseltine and Garry Gumprich) defeated Doug Armour and his team from the Souris Curling Club (Ken Davis, Jim Horn and Bill Scott) 10-4 and will represent Manitoba at the Manitoba at the 2016 Canadian Master Championships. Armour had defeated former champion Murray Duncan-Virden (8-5) in the semi-final.

Franklin, Malanchuk Advance to Credit Unions Masters Finals - Defending women's champion Pat Malanchuk-St. Vital and Mark Franklin-Granite have won the Page 1-1 Playoff games and berths in the Manitoba's Credit Unions Masters Championships at Thistle. Malanchuk defeated Rita VandeVyvere-Fort Rouge (6-3) and Franklin defeated Doug Armour-Souris (4-3).             

In the 9am Sunday semi-finals, VandeVyvere will play former champion Joyce McDougall-Brandon and Armour will play Murray Duncan-Virden. McDougall won the Page 3-4 game 6-5 over Kathy Isaac-Morden while Duncan was a 6-4 winner over Lawrie Hogg-Stonewall.

Playoff Teams Set in Credit Unions Masters - Doug Armour's Souris team and Murray Duncan-Virden finished the round robin portion of the Manitoba's Credit Unions Masters Men's Championship at Thistle with 6-1 records to advance to the playoff round as the top two teams in their pool. Armour earned the spot in the Page Playoff 1-1 game thanks to an 8-2 round robin win over Duncan.

In the other pool, Laurie Hogg-Stonewall and Mark Franklin-Granite advanced to the playoffs. First place in the pool was determined in the final round robin game on the Sunday noon draw when Hogg lost 5-3 to Franklin. Armour plays Franklin in the Page 1-1 game and Hogg meets Duncan in the 2-2 game.

In the triple knock-out Women's playoff, Rita VandeVyvere-Fort Rouge will play defending champion Pat Malanchuk-St. Vital in the Page Playoff 1-1 game, after the two advanced as the A-Event qualifiers. Kathy Isaac-Morden is the B-Event Qualifier with a 6-4 win over former champion Joyce McDOugall-Brandon. The fourth playoff team was determined when McDougall defeated Lynda Draper-Virden 6-5 in an extra end in the C-Event final.

In both the Men's and Women's events, the first playoff round goes at 7:30pm Sunday with the semi-finals at 9:00am Sunday and the finals at 1:00pm.
