Thanksgiving Spiel Will Go at Thistle

Tuesday Sep 25 2007

So far it has no name ? but there will be a bonspiel at the Thistle Curling Club on Thanksgiving weekend.

The organizing group, mainly the Randy Dutiaume team, have announced that they need only one team to fill a 24 team men?s bonspiel. Entry fee is $1,120.

Prize money will be at least $26,000 in a 4 groups Round Robin format. The MCT-WCT-CTRS event will start Friday October 5th at 3:00 and the championship round will be played on Monday October 8th.

A women?s event at the Charleswood Curling Club is also in the development stages.

In the men?s event Dutiaume, Carruthers, Boehmer, Nicholls/Dunstone, Vic Peters and Daley Peters headline a list of mainly Manitoba teams. Pete Fenson?s US team is also on the list.

Arnold Asham?s name also appears on the entry list for the bonspiel that has grown up to replace the Asham 8-Ender event previously planned for the Thanksgiving weekend.

In a signed posting on CurlingZone, Asham says he hopes the bonspiel succeeds but re-emphasizes the fact that he would have liked to run the bonspiel in the format that was originally proposed. That format included a group of juniors, a group of senior men and two groups of men?s teams in a double knock-out format.

Asham says he cancelled his bonspiel because he did not want to put the credibility of the MCT, WCT and the accumulation of CTRS points in question. ?As a sponsor of both the WCT and MCT, it appeared to some that I was using that to my advantage when really, all I was doing was running a format that I think is necessary to improve ?spiels,? Asham says.
