Team Jones = Team Manitoba Again!
Saturday Jan 28 2012Jennifer Jones and her St Vital team of Kaitlyn Lawes, Jill Officer and Dawn Askin have won the Manitoba Scotties Tournament of Hearts presented by Monsanto have won the Manitoba Scotties Tournament of Hearts presented by Monsanto.
Jones defeated Chelsea Carey in the provincial final x6-5 this afternoon on Portage. Carey blanked the opening three ends but trailed 4-2 after six ends. A deuce on seven tied the game and Carey was able to force Jones to a one on the eight end. Forced to take one herself on the ninth – the game was tied 5-5 coming home and Jones had the hammer. She had to make a 6 foot tapback to the button to win it.
Jones, Officer and Askin won Manitoba together in 2008 and have been Team Canada ever since. It is a first provincial Scotties win for Lawes who joined the team last season when they lost the Canadian final.
The National Scotties will be played in Red Deer in February.
FINAL - Home End: A carey rock back of the four foot held up for most of the end. With skip rocks to come, a Jones rock on the centre line full twelve foot has a Jones stone on each corner of it. With her first stone, Carey elected to go around the 3 Jones stones. Carey now laying two, Jones has a choice between a very difficult slach double and and more difficult double tap. She pushes he rock from the centre line 12 foot to bite the button on the tee line - partially open. Carey with her final rock, playing a draw tap with full sweep all the way, left Jones facing three. Jones' had no choice but to tap oneof her stones biting the top of the rings - she bumped it to the four foot for the win.
9th End: Carey drew for a single facing five Jones counters. Game tied 5-5 coming home, Jones has the hammer.
8th End: Facing a pair of Jones counters split in the back of the 12 foot circle. Carey hit the open one and stuck for shot rock. Jones rolled out on her hit and Carey's perfect draw to the second Jones rock, behind cover, forced Jones to draw for 1.
7th End: A pair of draws to the four foot by Kristy McDonald had Carey in good shape again. The exchange of shots resulte din a Carey tapback to the four-foot for two and a tie (4-4)
6th End: A big end building for Carey when a Jones hit and roll forced to her play a runback. It was for three but missed, and Jones stole one. to go up 4-2.
5th End: The end was played in and around the four foot. With skips rocks to come, Jones was laying two. Carey tapped one back – Jones` draw went to the back of the button potentially letting Carey off the hook but her draw didn`t curl up enough. When Jones threw her last rock, there were four Carey and two Jones rocks in and biting the four foot. A gentle tap moved the rocks around and left Jones a three to lead 3-2 at the fifth end break.
4th End: Finally, rocks in play and Carey in trouble until Kristy McDonald made a runback double to clear the house, and lie shot rock with several biters in play. Jones hit ended up as another biter but shot rock - giving Carey the opportunity to play a split to lie two. She overcurled and pushed her own rock through the rings. Jones was light on her attempt to put a second counter in the rings. Carey made her split for a pair.
3rd End: Jones starts with a close centre guard and Carey goes behind to the top of the eight foot. When Jones' runback fails and leaves a guard Carey draws to the open side biting the 8-foot on the tee-line. When second Kristen Foster rolled away instead of sticking for two with her second rock hit, the end changed. Jones first rock was a draw to bite the four foot partially buried - Carey hit and rolled open - Jones stuck - Carey blanked.
2nd End: With a couple of guards in play, the end settled into an exchange of hits in the side of the the 12 foot circle. Carey hit and rolled out to blank the second end.
1st End: From the first Jones rock in the rings, it was a hitting end. Carey with hammer, blanked.

Semi-Final - 10th end: Mostly open after Askin's first rock tick shot tapped a guard on the rings, allowing Jones to hit with second stone. Spencer had a rock top 12, second shot, when she threw her first - a perfect draw behind to the back of the four foot. Jones got lucky on an attempt to rip the top one, missed it but picked Spencer's rock out of back of the four foot. Spencer had to hit the shot stone, in the same track she had over-curled in earlier. Her hit over-curled again, rolled out and Jones didn't have to throw the last stone. Final score 7-5. Jones advances against Chelsea Carey in the 1:30pm final.
9th End: Spencer finally got a deuce. Facing two, Jones attempted a front eight foot to back eight foot double kill but got onl the top one. Spencer elected to hit the second shot rock with her final stone and stuck it for a two. Jones leads 7-5 with hammer coming home.
8th End: Two more for Jones. With her last rock, Spencer had one biting the four foot and Jones had two together inthe side of the eight foot. Spencer elected to hit but over-curled removing only one. Jones hit for a second point and a 7-3 lead after eight ends.
7th End: On an open end, Spencer drew to a Jones biter on the back corner of the rings. Jones blasted it out to blank to continue to lead 5-3 with hammer.
6th End: Spencer faced three Jones counters when she threw her last rock. A draw to the dge of the button were her choices. She stuck the double for one and trails 5-3 without the hammer.
5th End: You’ll hear it at least once almost every night at any curling club in the country. Scoring ones and giving up twos is not a formula for winning. For Barb Spencer and her Fort Rouge team however that was the pattern through the first four ends of the morning semi-final at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts presented by Monsanto.
On the first and third ends, Jennifer Jones and her St Vital team forced Spencer to take a point facing two. On the second and fourth ends, Jones was able to get the house split and scored deuces both times.
Jones led 4-2 after four ends. On the fifth, Spencer’s team made a series of draws behind a corner guard but Jones and her team followed each with a run-back takeout. Spencer rolled out with her first hit attempt, leaving Jones the guard. Her draw didn’t bury but she was lying two again. Spencer’s draw to the four foot bit the front of the rings – the Jones draw counted and the St Vital team leads 5-2 at the fifth end break.
** PLAYOFF DRAW: 7:45PM Saturday: (Spencer-Jones Semi-Final: Winner vs Carey in Final) Chelsea Carey and her team are back where they were a year ago – in the final of the Manitoba Scotties Tournament of Hearts presented by Monsanto. Carey and her Morden foursome defeated Barb Spencer’s Fort Rouge team 10-5 this evening in Portage in the Page Playoff 1-1 Game. They led 4-1 after four ends and got stronger from there.
Spencer, who was the last unbeaten team at 6-0 before losing her final round robin game and tonight’s first playoff game, now drops to the Sunday morning semi-final where the opponent will be Jennifer Jones.
Jones defeated Lisa DeRiviere-Miami in the Page Playoff 2-2 Game. DeRiviere, the surprise team of the event, led 4-3 at the fifth end break but saw the game tied 5-5 after seven. Under the Jones team pressure, DeRiviere gave up three consecutive steals to lose her first Scotties playoff game 8-5.
TIEBREAK DRAW: 4PM Friday: (DeRiviere Surprises Overton-Clapham; Plays Jones in Page 2-2 Game) Down three after the first end, Jennifer Jones and her team dominated Jill Thurston the rest of the way today – tied the score at 4-4 after four ends and led 8-5 coming home. Jones will play unheralded Lisa DeRiviere and her Miami team in the Page Playoff 2-2 game this evening. The Miami team stayed with defending champion Cathy Overton-Clapham all the way this afternoon, trailed by one coming home and scored two to win 5-4.
The DeRiviere vs Overton-Clapham game was not classic, featuring as many misses as great shots but credit to the young team, they took advantage of the opportunities when presented.
Jones on the other hand, after that first end, put on a clinic of doublekills and shotmaking that had Thurston simply outgunned.
So Jones plays DeRiviere and the Page Playoff 1-1 game will see Barb Spencer play Chelsea Carey.
The winner between Jones and DeRiviere advances to the semi-final at 9:30 tomorrow morning against the loser between Carey and Spencer.
** DRAW 14: 12:15PM FRIDAY: (Spencer in First; Jones vs Thurston in Tiebreaker) The first place teams have been determined. Barb Spencer will play Chelsea Carey in the Page Playoff 1-1 Game tonight at PCU Centre in Portage. Both teams go into the evening playoff game coming off losses.
Spencer lost 6-5 to Darcy Robertson this afternoon, giving up a steal of one when her last rock tapback attempt rubbed a guard. Carey also lost her final round robin game, a loss to Michelle Montford on the morning draw..
There will be tiebreaker games for second place in each group. Jennifer Jones defeated Jill Thurston 9-4 this afternoon so both teams finish the round robin at 5-2 and they’ll face-off in a tiebreak game at 4pm. Jones controlled the first game from the outset, leading 7-2 after 6 ends.
In the other group, Cathy Overton-Clapham will play Lisa DeRiviere in a 4pm tiebreaker after both won their morning games.
In the other two games this afternoon, running out the round-robin, Terry Ursel defeated Kelsey Boettcher 12-7 and Kelsey Russill beat Lori Forbes 6-3.
** Draw13: Saturday 8:30AM: (Carey in First; DeRiviere vs Overton-Clapham in Tiebreaker)Despite a morning draw 11-8 loss to Michelle Montford, Chelsea Carey has finished the round-robin in first place as the first competition group wrapped up the qualifying portion of the Scotties Tournament of Hearts presented by Monsanto. Carey finishes the round-robin at 5-2, tied with defending champion Cathy Overton-Clapham. However Carey’s win yesterday, in a re-match of last year’s final, gives Carey first place over Overton-Clapham.
Overton-Clapham improved to 5-2 with a win 7-5 over Janet Harvey which eliminates Harvey from the playoff chase.
CLIP
And that sets up a tiebreaker with Lisa DeRiviere, after the young Miami team won their fifth game 8-4 over Lisa Menard.
In the fourth game this morning, to wrap up their round-robin, Liza Park beat Kim Link 11-1. Both teams finish at 2-5.
** Draw 12: Friday 7:45PM: (Spencer Beats Jones, Spencer-Carey Currently in First -Tiebreakers Possible)As the morning’s final round robin games get underway, seven teams still have a chance to make it to the playoff round at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts presented by Monsanto. Of them, only Barb Spencer’s final ranking is assured. An 8-6 win Friday night over Jennifer Jones means Spencer is still unbeaten at 6-0 and will finish in first place in the group no matter what happens in her final game against her sister Darcy Robertson. At 3-3, Robertson is out of the playoffs.
Jones is at 4-2 and currently in third place behind 5-1 Jill Thurston, who beat Robertson on the late draw Friday. Jones plays Thurston on the noon draw and her task is simple to state, tougher to accompish. Jones must beat Thurston to force a tiebreaker for second place and then beat her again to make the playoffs.
In the other group, Chelsea Carey knows her team will be in the playoffs with a record after six games of 5-1.
Even if she loses to Michelle Montford Saturday morning, 5-2 is good enough for at least a tie for first. That would put Carey in a tie with the winner between Cathy Overton-Clapham and Janet Harvey, who will also be at 5-2.
Lisa DeRivere is also still in the playoff race and a win over Lisa Menard Saturday morning means a 5-2 finish as well and a tiebreaker in that group as well.
** DRAW 11: Friday 4PM: (Carey Back in First, Tiebreaker Possible) Chelsea Carey has moved back into sole possession of first place in the Scotties group which has just completed play for today. Carey defeated Overton-Clapham 7-5 this afternoon to improve their record to 5-1. The key shot was a flat double Carey executed on a pair of rocks in the four foot to count two for a 6-4 lead after eight ends.
On the ninth, O-Clapham played a double of her own for two but got only one and trailing by one coming home, O-Clapham`s first rock draw slid to the back edge of the button and Carey followed with a perfect draw to the face of it.
Overton-Clapham was left with a desperation raise double takeout which no one in the PCU Centre expected to work. She drops to 4-2 and into a tie with Janet Harvey who defeated Michelle Montford 7-1.
On tomorrow morning’s final round-robin draw for this group, Overton-Clapham plays Harvey while Carey meets Montford.
At this stage Carey knows her team will be in the playoffs. Even if she loses to Montford, 5-2 is good enough for at least a tie for first. The winner between Overton-Clapham and Harvey will also be at 5-2.
Montford’s loss today drops her to 3-3 so she is out of the playoff chase. Lisa DeRivere is also still in the playoff chase. She defeated Liza Park 7-5 and also has a 4-2 record. The young Miami team plays Lisa Menard in the morning and can finish in that 5-2 grouping. In fact if DeRiviere wins, she will force a tiebreaker draw for second place.
In the other game Kim Link earned her second win in a six-end defeat of Lisa Menard.
** DRAW 10: Friday 12:15PM: (Spencer Last Undefeated Team at Manitoba Scotties) Barb Spencer and her Fort Rouge team are the last undefeated team in the Scotties Tournament of Hearts presented by Monsanto. Spencer scored a three on the ninth to end her game with previously unbeaten Jill Thurston at a score of 9-4. Thurston is now at 4-1, tied in this group with Jennifer Jones who beat Darcy Robertson this afternoon. Leading that one 6-5, a four on the ninth ended that one with Jones posting a 10-5 victory. As Jones says the shots may have been a little crisper today but she can’t be looking at the standings board.
Jones plays Spencer on today’s late draw while Roberston, with a 3-2 record is now in a must win situation in her game with Thurston.
Terry Ursel and Kelsey Russill both won their first games. Ursel beat Lori Forbes 9-4 and Russill defeated Kelsey Boettcher 7-4.
** DRAW 9: Friday 8:30AM: (Harvey Hands Carey First Loss) Chelsea Carey and her Morden team have lost their first game of the Scotties Championship presented by Monsanto – a 6-5 extra-end loss to Janet Harvey. Carey scored a deuce on the tenth to tie and had a chance to guard shot rock on the button on the extra end. Carey guard wasn’t good enough. She left Harvey a hit up the centre on a rock about three-quarters open. She rolled out, leaving the Harvey second shot rock counting for the 6-5 win.
Cathy Overton-Clapham has bounced back from that opening game loss to win four in a row and sits tied with Carey with the 4-1 record.
The defending champion defeated Michelle Montford 11-5 this morning, although the score really doesn’t tell the tale. The game was tied at 5-5 after seven ends when Cathy O scored a four. In their attempt to recover, Montford gave up two more to create the official 11-5 result.
Montford’s record is now 3-2 along Harvey and with Lisa DeRiviere, who defeated Kim Link 7-5 this morning.
Liza Park posted her first win, a 6-4 victory over Lisa Menard. Park, Menard and Link are all 1-4.
** DRAW 8: Thursday 7:45pm (Carey, Thurston, Spencer Perfect at Manitoba Scotties) Chelsea Carey stayed perfect at 4-0 (9-2 over Lisa Menard) and Michelle Montford (5-4 over Lisa DeRiviere) and Cathy Overton Clapham (9-3 over Kim Link) both kept pace as their late wins Thursday improved their records to 3-1. DeRiviere, who lost to Montford, and Janet Harvey, who defeated Liz Park, are both at 2-2.
For the top teams in the competition, the championship really starts Friday. Carey is alone in first place in her group while Barb Spencer and Jill Thurston are still perfect on top of the other group.
Thurston and Spencer lead Jennifer Jones and Darcy Robertson who are both 3-1 and Kelsey Boettcher who is 2-2.
In her block, Carey is ahead of Cathy Overton Clapham and Michelle Montford both at 3-1 and Janet Harvey and Lisa DeRiviere at 2-2.
All of the higher ranked teams are still in the chase. The three undefeated teams can afford one stumble in the final three games while those 3-1 teams need to be perfect in their three games. The two teams who have a chance to break open the playoff doors are the Lisa DeRiviere and Kelsey Boettcher. They have already survived their games with the four top teams in their group with 2-2 records and now play their games against the lesser rated teams. Those two will be watching with interest, along with the fans as the top teams beat eachother over the next day and a half in Portage.
** DRAW 7: Thursday 4PM: (Boettcher over Jones, Improves to 2-2) The difference between the top teams in the competition and the lesser teams is mainly experience. And as the week advances, and those teams gain experience on this arena ice, the games get a little closer. But the results are mostly still the same, the top seeded teams come away with most of the victories but occasionally there is an upset. Kelsey Boettcher and her team authored one this afternoon. Tied 6-6 coming home with Jennifer Jones, Boettcher improved her record to 2-2 when Jones last rock draw was heavy, leaving the Stonewall team a steal and a 7-6 win.
Jill Thurston led Terry Ursel 5-2 after four ends. The Plumas team fought back but those three points were the margin of victory at the end of a 9-6 win. It was Thurston’s fourth win – with three to play. Barb Spencer is also 4-0 after a five-end shutout of Lori Forbes.
And Darcy Robertson improved to 3-1, tied with Jones, with an 8-5 victory over Kelsey Russill.
So this group has finished the easy half of its draw. 4-0 Spencer and Thurston and 3-1 Jones & Robertson now play each other while 2-2 Kelsey Boettcher, still has a chance to make the playoffs plays Ursel, Russill, and Forbes who are, so far, winless.
Draw 6: Thursday 12:15pm: (Carey 3-0, DeRiviere Improves to 2-1) Playing from the bottom side of the draw, Lisa DeRiviere has accomplished two victories against top seeded teams. After what might called an accidental win yesterday over Cathy Overton-Clapham, the young team was full value for a 6-2 victory over Janet Harvey. The Miami team improves to a record of 2-1 while the veteran Harvey is at 1-2.
Cathy Overton-Clapham improved to 2-1 with an 8-1 win over Lisa Menard and Chelsea Carey stayed perfect with 9-2 win over Kim Link. Both Link and Menard are at 1-2.
Michelle Montford is also 2-1 while Liza Park is still winless after Montford defeated Park 10-4.
About to go on the ice for their second games of the day, Jennifer Jones, Jill Thurston, and Barb Spencer are still perfect at 3-0 and looking to go 4-0 before they begin the second half of the draw when the top seeded teams play each other.
** DRAW 5: THURSDAY 8:30am: (Jones First to 3-0 at Manitoba Scotties) By virtue of a five-end shutout victory, top seed Jennifer Jones was the first team in this year's Manitoba Scotties Tournament of Hearts presented by Monsanto. Jones, #4 Barb Spencer and #6 Jill Thurston all won their third games of the Scotties championship this morning while Darcy Roberton’s record improved to 2-1. None of the games went the full ten ends.
Jones blanked Lori Forbes 10-0, Thurston was a 12-3 winner over Kelsey Russill and Spencer defeated Kelsey Boettcher 8-4. The margin of victory being the opening four which the Spencer team score don the third end after a pair of blanks.
Robertson scored four deuces in beating Terry Ursel 9-2.
In this group, clearly the playoff teams at week’s end will come from the top four seeds. It is from that clear in the group about to go on the ice at PCU Centre. Chelsea Carey is the only unbeaten team. Liza Park is the only winless team and the other six teams all split on opening day.
Carey plays the Kim Link team with Maureen Bonar throwing skip stones while Link throws second as she recovers from knee problems. Meanwhile Park plays Michelle Montford.
Four teams with 2-1 records and four at 1-2 is a real possibility, one rarely seen in Manitoba championship play after three draws.
** DRAW 4: 8pm Wednesday: (Carey Alone at 2-0 in Her Scotties Group) Last night’s fourth draw again saw a series of short games as Chelsea Carey improved her record to 2-0, six teams end the day at 1-1 and a single 0-2 team in that group while the other grouping has 3 2-0’s, 2 1-1’s and 3 0-2’s. Carey defeated Lisa DeRiviere-Miami who was credited with the big upset of the day when she posted an early win over Cathy Overton-Clapham. It was a 10-1 six-ender.
Janet Harvey earned a split on the day with an 11-5 win over Lisa Menard-Dauphin and Michelle Montford earned a split with a 9-2 win over Kim Link. For Link and Menard, the losses followed opening draw wins.
Liza Park is the lone 0-2 team in the group after a 5-4 loss to Overton –Clapham. Tied coming home without last rock, Park had a chance to hit and roll buried but rubbed a guard and the defending champion did not have to throw the final stone to gain her opening day split.
In the other group Jennifer Jones, Barb Spencer and Jill Thurston all start Thursday at 2-0. Kelsey Boettcher and Darcy Robertson are 1-1. Lori Forbes and Westman teams skipped by Terry Ursel and Kelsey Russill are winless.
** DRAW 3: 4PM Wednesday: (Boettcher Three Earns Stonewall Team a Day One Split) Earning a split, Kelsey Boettcher and her Stonewall team had a good first day at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts presented by Monsanto. On the first draw of the day, Boettcher had a last rock shot to beat Jill Thurston-Granite. It over-curled and she lost game 1.
On the late afternoon draw, Boettcher was tied 5-5 with Darcy Robertson playing the eighth end. A miss on the ninth gave Robertson a steal of two but Boettcher was able to force the play on the home end, down two with hammer. With one Boettcher rock buried in the four foot, Robertson attempted a last rock draw to the second shot stone in the side of the eight foot. This time, the Robertson stone over-curled leaving Boettcher a last rock draw-tap for the third point. It took a measure but the Stonewall team posted a three for an 8-7 victory and a split on day one. It also meant a split for Team Robertson on Day One.
The other three games all went according to form. Jennifer Jones-St Vital, Thurston, and Barb Spencer-Fort Rouge all improved to 2-0 in eight-end games. Jones beat Terry Ursel-Plumas 8-3, Spencer defeated Kelsey Russill-Brandon by the same 8-3 score and Thurston was a 9-1 winner over Lori Forbes-The Pas. The winners are all 2-0 while the losers are all 0-2.
** DRAW 2: 12:15PM Wednesday (Upsets on Draw 2 at Scotties)r - Where the morning’s opening draw was strictly by the form chart, draw #2 has seen three of the lower ranked teams post victories. The biggest upset was authored by
Lisa Menard’s Dauphin team scored in seven of the first nine ends but only led Michelle Montford-Assiniboine Memorial by 1 coming home with hammer. Menard scored a single for a 9-7 win.
Kim Link-East St Paul won the second half of her match with Janet Harvey.
Only Chelsea Carey-Morden followed the form chart as last year’s finalist team outscored Liza Park’s
**DRAW 1: Wednesday 8:30AM - Jennifer Jones, Barb Spencer, Darcy Robertson and their teams all won relatively easy opening round games this morning at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts presented by Monsanto. Of the three, Jones and her St Vital team were given the stiffest test by Kelsey Russill and her
A stolen four on the fourth gave Spencer’s
Adjusting to very keen arena ice is the challenge for the less experienced teams and Lori Forbes and her team from The Pas had the most difficulty in their five end loss to Darcy Robertson-Fort Rouge.
The fourth game was the closest this morning. Jill Thurston-Granite led by four when Kelsey Boettcher-Stonewall, who is in her first Scotties, scored three on the fifth. Having scored her first Scotties points, Boettcher fought back to tie five-all after eight ends and forced Thurston to draw facing four on the ninth end. Down one with hammer coming home, Boettcher had a rock buried biting the front off the four foot with skips rocks to come. They traded first shots and Thurston covered the pin with her last rock leaving Boettcher a difficult shot to win. Her last rock draw- tapback overcurled, she rubbed her own stone and rolled away giving Thurston an opening game victory.
