124th MCA Bonspiel Underway
Thursday Jan 19 2012Tradition holds that the President of CurlManitoba gets a significant say in who participates in the MCA Bonspiel Official Opening Rock Ceremony. I was honoured by the presence of Don Macdonnell (Fort Rouge CC) and Curtis Recksiedler (Morris CC), the Presidents of the two clubs of which I am a member. They acted as the sweepers. And by the presence of MCA & CCA Past President Barry Greenberg, the only Granite CC member to have served as President of the Canadian Association, who delivered the opening rock. And especially by a Manitoba curling legend Bruce Hudson, an MCA PAst President and the 1964 and 67 Manitoba Champion. He wore the Strathcona sweater of his father, Gordon M. Hudson, as he held the broom. Hudson Senior wore the sweater at the 1928 and 1929 Briers.
For the historical record, Greenberg made an un-aided draw to the full eight-foot circle.
Pictured l-r are Greenberg, Recksiedler, Coutts, Hudson, Macdonnell.
