Gudz Wins Brandon Masters Berth
Wednesday Jan 11 2012Brandon Curling Club's Frank Gudz, throwing lead and calling game for Darryl Andrews, Jim Horn and Bill Campbell, has won the provincial champions berth available in the Brandon Masters Bonspiel. Gudz needed only four ends to defeat Doug Armour-Souris in the finl of the berth playoff. Armour had earlier needed an extra end to eliminate Reg Malanchuk and his Fort Rouge team whil Gudz beat clubmate Wayne Griffin in the semi-final.
In the competitive division of the bonspiel, Armour, Griffin and Murray Duncan-Virden all finished tied for first place under the event's unique pints system. However, Duncan was declared the winner with Griffin second and Armour third on a countback. Malanchuk placd fourth in the 'spiel.
Because Duncan's team already had a provincial regionl berth into provincials, Gudz made the four-team playoff as his team had finished fifth in the bonspiel. Gudz played Griffin, the highest seeded team in the berth playoff, while 2nd seed Armour played 3rd seed Malanchuk.
Gudz, Andrews and Horn are former Manitoba Senior Champions - playing on two different teams.
