Doering Wins; Birchard-Vandepoele Canola Junior Women's Final
Monday Jan 09 2012DRAW 17 (PLAYOFFS): Kyle Doering, Colton Lott, Lucas Vandenbosch and Kyle Kurz (coached by Calvin Edie) posted a 9-3 victory today at West Kildonan to win the Canola Manitoba Junior Men's Championship. Their regular second man, Derek Oryniak left yesterday to go to the Youth Olympics in Europe but obviously the team didn’t suffer from inserting their fifth man (Kurz) into the line-up.
The Doering team had to qualify for the playoffs through a tiebreaker and rolled from there to the championship.
It is a cruel fact that you can lose one game – and if it is the wrong game – your dream of going to the Canadian Championship ends. And that’s the way it happened for Joey Witherspoon and his Fort Rouge team today at the Canola Junior Men’s at West Kildonan.
Playing Kyle Doering, Witherspoon was undefeated and the favourite. His Fort Rouge team trailed 3-2 playing the fifth and blanked the end to go to the mid-game break with the hammer. The sixth end went wrong when Witherspoon attempted a raise takeout for a possible two but ended up removing his own stone and giving up a steal of three. At that point Doering led 6-2 and the result seemed inevitable.
At the Canola Junior Women’s in Minnedosa, Allyssa Vandepoele will attempt to match Doering accomplishment of winning the title from a tiebreaker round. Vandepoele defeated Katie Spencer this afternoon to advance to the 5pm final against Shannon Birchard.
After winning two tiebreakers yesterday, Vandepoele won her morning playoff game over Sydney Arnal and defeated Katie Spencer 10-1 in seven ends in the semifinal.
The key was the sixth when, trailing already by four Spencer was short on a draw facing four more.
So Vandepoele will play Shannon Birchard in the provincial final at 5pm in Minnedosa. It will be Vandepoele’s third final in four years but it will also be the third final in four years for Birchard’s fourth shooter Selena Kaatz who played with Vandepoele for several years before this one.
