Manitoba Curling tour Kicks Off 17th Season

Tuesday Sep 18 2007

MCT News Release

The Manitoba Curling Tour is set to move into its 17th season, offering cash purses totalling $431,460 in 17 events. MCT President Andy Stewart and Coordinator announced details of the coming season at a September 18th news event.

The schedule begins in Selkirk with the newly-sponsored McMillan Insurance Classic (formerly the Steeltown Classic) with men's and women's divisions, from September 28th to October 1st.

In other developments, the tour now has Canad Inns as a major sponsor, joining Labatt Breweries Manitoba and Asham Curling Supplies, and a new website has been created (www.mancurltour.ca) to provide improved local information and liaison with MCT event operations.

To avoid conflict with the Canada Cup qualifying bonspiels of the Canadian Curling Association and the Continental Cup, the Manitoba Curling Tour Championships will be shifted back to January 4th-6th, 2008, and will be held once again at the Portage Curling Club with 24-team men's and 12-team women's divisions.

In addition to the McMillan Insurance Classic, two other MCT events will have new titles and sponsors this season. Beausejour's cashspiel (October 11th-14th) now is known as the SICU Classic (South Interlake Credit Union Classic), and in Morris, the former Enns Brothers Classic will be called the Morris Curling Classic (November 30th-December 3rd).

The sale of the Agricore United operation in Manitoba has resulted in a one-year suspension of the long running Oiltown Classic in Virden, and in another change the two Asham Open events (men's and women's) both will be held on the Thanksgiving weekend (October 5th-9th) at the Thistle Curling Club in Winnipeg.

At its annual meeting in June, the Manitoba Curling Association approved an MCT request to clarify the tour's representation of its men's champion each year in the Safeway Championship. The highest ranking eligible team in the men's MCT Championship will earn a provincial berth, this season in Brandon in February.
