Grassie Wins Fort Rouge Coors Light Christmas Spiel
Thursday Dec 30 2010Sean Grassie, winner of three events in the 2010 season, has won the opening event of the 2011 Manitoba Curling tour season with a 7-3 victory over David Kraichy in the Fort Rouge Coors Light Christmas Open. Grassie with is usual third Corey Chambers & second Scott McCamis and Nathan Bodnarchuk subbing for an injured Stuart Shiells scored three deuces while holding Kraichy to singles on every scoring opportunity. The Grassie foursome picked up a $1,500 champions cheque while Kraichy and his team earned $1,000.
Grassie defeated defending bonspiel champion Dave Johnson (Garry Shibata, David Bay, Craig Scott) 4-2 in the semi-final while Kraichy, with a team which included Brad Van Walleghem, Rylan Young and Arlen Wiens defeated Mike Mahon (Gord Buchanan, Blair Smith, Larry Lagace) 6-5 on an extra end in their semi-final
The semi-finalists each picked up $400 per team.
The quarterfinalists were teams skipped by Nigel Milnes (Ian Fordyce, Jeff & Terry Milnes), Reid Carruthers (Derek Samagalski, Pat McCallum, Brent Jesson), Randy Dutiaume (Kyle & Mitch Einarson, Cory Wolchuk), and Tyler Drews (Albert Bazinet, Josh Drews, Darryl Evans). The quarterfinalist earned $350 per team.
In the Consolation Final, Kurt Strand (Ken & Chris Strand & Brian Lowdon) defeated Norm Magnusson (Gerald May, Reese Allison, Resby Coutts) 8-3.
