Hall of Fame Dinner Donates $5000 to Brandon Foundation

The competitive spirit still burns in Mabel Mitchell and her 1983 Canadian Senior Women?s championship team.

On Friday, June 29 Mitchell, Mary Adams, June Clark and Mildred Murray were in the golf course in the Brandon Area Charitable Foundation Golf Tournament. Given the choice of playing in the women?s stroke play format or entering their foursome in the best-ball scramble event, the four were quick to say they had no interest in the scramble ? they?d be playing head-to-head against each other. Mitchell won the ladies section of the tournament while Clark placed second.

As with most such events, the golf is secondary to the ?good-works? supported by the organization?s volunteers. A surprise to all in attendance was a $5,000 presentation to the foundation by Ron Helwer, who chaired the April 21st Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame dinner in Brandon.

Mitchell and her 1983 champions, the only Brandon team to ever win a Canadian curling title, were among the inductees into the hall at that April 21 dinner. They were pleased to join Helwer in presenting a cheque to Keay Dobson-Golletz, Brandon Area Foundation Vice-Chair. The money will be looked after by the Foundation and will be used in future years to fund sport-related projects in the community.

Helwer reported that profits from the dinner exceeded $20,000 with half retained in the community. In addition to the $5,000 contribution to the Brandon Area Foundation, $5,000 was also presented to KidSport.
