Nolan Thiessen, lead on the Kevin Koe 2010 World Men’s Curling Champion team, has confirmed he will be joining forces with Mike McEwen’s Manitoba Finalist team ‘for a day in mid-July’. Thiessen and his World Curling Tour rivals Mike McEwen, Denni Neufeld, Matt Wozniak, and B.J. Neufeld have confirmed their intentions to participate in the 6th Annual Sandra Schmirler Manitoba Golf Classic, July 22nd at Larters at St. Andrews Golf & Country Club.

In the first five years, the Sandra Schmirler Manitoba Golf Classic has raised nearly $80,000 in funding for the Sandra Schmirler Foundation and the Children’s Hospital Foundation. With the help of these great young Manitoba curlers, many sponsors and the curling fans who support the event, the organizing committee, chaired by Zivan Saper, anticipates funding for the two charities to surpass $100,000 in 2010.

Thiessen, who was born in Pilot Mound and raised in Brandon, has played a key role in the Koe team’s rise to the top of world curling. He was with the Koe team at the Canadian Olympic Trials in Edmonton in December. Thiessen helped Koe become the first ‘rookie’ Canadian skip, since Orest Meleschuk in 1972, to win the Canadian and World championships in his first appearance at both.

Thiessen’s junior curling years in Brandon included a Manitoba Junior Men’s Championship in 2001 with Mike McEwen and Denni Neufeld.

An entry form is available at www.thecurler.com/schmirlermanitobagolf. Foursomes or single entries are welcome. The $760/foursome ($200 single) entry fee includes breakfast, cart & 18 holes of golf, lunch, on-course contests and promotions, and a buffet-style prize banquet.

For more information, go to the web link noted above or call Zivan Saper 955-9202. (A pdf of the event poster is attached.)
