So who's the New Third?

Thursday Apr 22 2010

The Jennifer Jones Team line-up has changed before.  Jones, Karen Porritt, Lynn Fallis-Kurz and Dana Allerton are in the record book as the 2002 Manitoba Champions. By 2005, when Jones won Manitoba again (& Canada),  there was a complete change to the line-up of Jones, Cathy Overton-Clapham, Jill Officer and Cathy Gauthier. In 2007, Janet Arnott was the lead in what was obviously a temporary measure. The next year a three year dynasty was established when Dawn Askin moved into the lead spot.

And now there will be another change.

I have difficulty imagining who might be the new third - the person expected to step into the most dominant team of recent years and help it continue to succeed.
I can only identify three currently active Manitoba players who are the right age and who have the talent and the dedication to fit the team - but I have no idea how they fit with the team in regard to the intangible of team compatibility.

The three who come immediately to my mind are Kerri Flett, Chelsea Carey, and Kristy Jenion. All three have a clear commitment to a team for next year and the future but an offer from Jennifer Jones and her team would be tough to refuse. (You might think of someone else and I'd be interested in who that might be.)

Otherwise, it means the team has to go outside of Manitoba again. However, our sport is still one that demands you have a real job to support the habit. That means a new player joining the team, like Dawn Askin a few years ago,  has to have another reason for moving to Manitoba.

I wonder if Jason Gunnlaugson has a girlfriend somewhere that I don't know about?
