Westcott Wins Masters Men's Championship
Tuesday Mar 09 2010
Ron Westcott and his Fort Rouge team have won the Manitoba’s Credit Unions Masters Men’s championship. Westcott scored an 8-2 final game win today on home ice. Lawrie Hogg’s Stonewall team got in trouble on the second end and gave up a four ender. To their credit, they came back with a deuce when Hogg played a chip and roll to roll the second counter onto the rings on the third.
But that was a close as they could get and the game ended after 6 ends.
For Westcott and second Bob Boughey, it is a first Manitoba Masters title to go with a Senior title won with Brandon’s Neil Andrews back in 1999.
For third Bob Jenion, a first Manitoba Masters title to go with a trip to the Brier with John Bubbs in 2003.
For lead Garry Smith, a second Masters title along with Senior titles with Martin Bailey and Len Jackson.
The Westcott team joins Elaine Jones as Manitoba’s reps at the Canadian Open Masters in New Brunswick in two weeks time.

Saturday: Draw 11 - Ken Davis and his Souris team have locked up first place in the roundrobin standings in their competition group at the Manitoba’s Credit Unions Masters Championship at the Winnipeg Fort Rouge Curling Club. The Davis team defeated Minnedosa’s Ray Orr 6-2 to improve their perfect record to 6-0.
Meanwhile Les Hooper-Pembina defeated Norm Magnusson of Fort Rouge 6-4 – giving the two teams a tie for second place at 4-2. Tomorrow morning’s game will determine the playoff picture. A win by one and a loss by the other means the winning team advances to the playoff round.
In the other two afternoon games, John Usackis win his second in a row, 8-6 over Bunny Small. And Barry Sadler improved his record to 3-3 with an 8-5 win over Tom Mowbray. Sadler still has a shot at the playoofs. He needs a win tomorrow morning against Usackis AND a loss by both Hooper and Magnusson to create a 3-way tie for second.
In the other group, Ron Westcott plays Reg Malanchuk in what is virtually a must win game for Malanchuk who lost earlier today. At 4-1, Malanchuk needs a win to move into a first place it with Westcott. A Westcott win guarantees him first place and drops Malanchuk back into logjam situation.
In that group, Len Jackson, 3-2, plays Lawrie Hogg, 4-1. A Jackson win means both would be also 4-2.

DRAW 1&2: Early Home Ice Advantage at Masters Men's - The Manitoba’s Credit Unions Masters Men’s Championship got underway this morning at the Fort Rouge Curling Club in Winnipeg with home ice advantage maybe being a factor on the first two draws. Fort Rouge icemaker Reece Allison usually has a pretty good curl in his ice and it may just be better than usual this week for the championship. More accustomed to the ice conditions, the three Fort Rouge teams all won their openers.
Top seed Ron Westcott (Fort Rouge) was the first winner off the ice this morning. Westcott scored a 6-end victory over St.Vital’s Brian McKenzie. Westcott led 5-0 at the mid-game break and when the teams traded singles point on the next two ends, the St Vital team conceded.
Fourth seed Reg Malanchuk, also a Fort Rouge club team, won his opener as well – a 6-4 win over Al Sharpe-Heather.
And on the afternoon draw, the third Fort Rouge team skipped by Norm Magnusson scored an 8-4 win over Tom Mowbray and his Cartwright team.
Defending Canadian Masters Champion Ray Orr and his Minnedosa team had last rock on the home end but Orr’s final draw overcurled, leaving Bunny Small and his Dauphin team a 5-4 winner. Other first round winners were Ken Davis-Dauphin who had to make a double kill on an extra end to beat John Usackis-Steinbach 8-7. Usackis is subbing in this week for the injured Abe Friesen. Lawrie Hogg- Stonewall (7-2 over Don Holmes-Flin Flon); Brandon’s Lory Saban removed one of two to give up a steal of one in a 5-4 win over Len Jackson (Carman), and former champion Les Hooper (Pembina) (8-5) over Barry Sadler-Portage.
