Jones Defends Masters Womens Title

Thursday Mar 04 2010

Elaine Jones, supported by Anne Wright, Pat Malanchuk and Ruth Wiebe,  has won her sixth Manitoba Masters Women’s Championship title with a 5-3 victory this afternoon over Karen Toderian and her Dauphin team. It was also Wiebe’s sixth provincial title. Jones was in control much of the game. She scored only a single on the third end when it looked early on like she was set to score big. However, steals of one on each of the next two ends gave the defending champion a three point lead.

The Dauphin team came back with two on the sixth end for the first multiple score of the game. A Jones single on the seventh end meant the Dauphin team trailed by two coming home with the hammer but they were unable to score the needed pair and the Jones team marked up their victory.

Jones was undefeated through the championship as she won the Masters Women’s for the fifth time – and for the sixth time overall for a team from the St Vital Curling Club which hosted this year’s event.

PLAYOFF ROUND 2: Dauphin’s Karen Toderian will play defending champion Elaine Jones for the manitoba’s Credit Unions masters Championship at the St Vital Curling Club this afternoon. Toderian advanced to the final with an 8-5 win over Pam Wiwcharuk and her Snow Lake team this morning.

The game turned in the middle ends. The Snow Lake team had scored a three on the third end to take a 4-2 lead but Toderian came back with a three on the fourth and then came out of the mid-game break to steal another to establish her own 2 point lead.

After Wiwcharuk scored one on the sixth end, Toderian buried a pair in the four foot and took two on the eighth to go up three coming home and the Snow Lake foursome could not overcome that lead.

Jones is so far undefeated in the championship. A win will be her fifth Masters Women’s championship, personally, and the sixth for a team representing St Vital. A win for Toderian will be the second in gthe event’s 11 year history for a Dauphin team. Doreen Lampard’s team won it in 2001, the second year the championship occurred.

PLAYOFF ROUND 1: Elaine Jones and her St Vital team are a win away from defending their Manitoba’s Credit Unions Masters Women’s Championship title. Jones and her lead Ruth Wiebe have won five of the ten masters Women’s championships since the competition began in 2000. They advanced to the Monday final with a 5-4 win tonight over Daupin’s Karen Toderian in the Page 1-1 Playoff game.

Toderian will drop into the Monday morning semi-final against Pam Wiwcharuk (Snow Lake), who won the evening Page 2-2 Playoff.

The Snow Lake team stole an extra end to beat Evelyn Clegg (Minnedosa) and knock her out of the event. It was the Clegg team’s third game of the day after losing their final round robin game then beating Fran Dagg (Brandon) in a tiebreaker.

TIEBREAK ROUND: Evelyn Clegg and her Minnedosa team have won the afternoon tiebreaker game at the Manitoba’s Credit Unions Masters Women’s Championship at St. Vital CC. Clegg did not need her last rock in 6-5 win over Brandon’s Fran Dagg. It was the second loss of the day for Dagg, who went from 5-0 at the head of the back – to out of the playoffs with 3 straight losses to end the event.

Clegg was forced into a tiebreaker earlier today when her last rock picked, allowing Gwen Smith a draw for three and a win.

Karen Toderian (Dauphin) earned first place based on the pre-event skill ranking and she’ll play Elaine Jones (St Vital) in the Page Playoff 1-1 game tonight.

With the tiebreaker win, Clegg advances to the Page 2-2 playoff game this evening against Pam Wiwcharuk (SNOW Lake). Those games go at 6:45 tonight.

ROUND 12: Defending champion Elaine Jones (St Vital) has completed a perfect 7-0 round robin in the manitoba’s Credit Unions Masters Women’s Championship with a 5-4 afternoon draw win over clubmate Sylvia Erickson. Erickson had the hammer coming home in a 5-5 tie game and looked like she had it sewed up when Jones made a last rock bump to the four foot to steal the win. The description sounds simple until I add that it was a four-rock combination raise to the four-foot – no question, the shot of the event so far.

The win gives Jones first place and a spot in tomorrow’s Page 1-1 Playoff game where she will play Dauphin’s Karen Toderian.

Pam Wiwcharuk (Snow Lake) sewed up second place in the group with a last end steal over Pat Porter (Steinbach). Looking for her first win,  Porter held the hammer in a 7-7 tie coming home but Wiwcharuk had a pair buried I nthe four foot when she threw it with virtually no hope of scoring.

Norma Johnson’s Dauphin team did what they had to do on the afternoon draw. A 6-2 win over Barb Withers (Cartwright) improved the Johnson team record to 5-2 but they fall a game short of Wiwcharuk’s 6-1 and miss the playoff round.

FINAL STANDINGS Group 1
7-0 Elaine Jones-St.Vital
6-1 Pam Wiwcharuk-Snow Lake
5-2 Norma Johnson-Dauphin
4-3 Marian Whalen-Assiniboine Memorial
3-4 Pat Gould-Assiniboine Memorial
2-5 Barb Withers-Cartwright
1-6 Sylvia Erickson-St. Vital
0-7 Pam Porter-Steinbach

ROUND 11: Three western Manitoba teams had a chance to lock up first place in their group. Fran Dagg (Brandon), Evelyn Clegg (Minnedosa) and Karen Toderian (Dauphin) all went in to the morning draw with 5-1 records. It was must-win for all of them to avoid the possibility of being eliminated.

It turned out, however, that all three of them lost. Toderian lost x-x to , Dagg was beaten x-x by, and Clegg had the game apparently in hand when a last rock tapback picked, wrecked and left Gwen Smith a draw for three and a win.

That set up a need for the pre-event skill-ranking to break the tie and Karen Toderian’s Dauphin team got the break – they earned the all-important spot in the Page 1-1 Playoff game. Clegg will play Dagg in a tiebreaker at 3:30 for the one playoff spot left in that group.

STANDINGS Group 2
5-2 Fran Dagg-Brandon
5-2 Evelyn Clegg-Minnedosa
5-2 Karen Toderian-Dauphin
3-4 Gwen Smith-Heather
3-4 Marg Streich-Selkirk
3-4 Marlene Murray-Heather
2-5 Carol Viki-Pembina

ROUND 9: Dagg Loses First, 3-Way Tie in Masters Womens Play - A trio of teams from the western side of the province share the lead in competition Group #2 at the Manitoba’s Credit Unions Masters Women’s Championship at St. Vital. Evelyn Clegg’s Minneodsa team came from behind to beat previously undefeated Fran Dagg (Brandon) and cause the tie.

Tied 4-4 at the mid-game break, Dagg scored singles in the next two ends but got in trouble on the seventh end. Clegg’s last rock takeout angled a Dagg rock out past one of her own and stayed in play for a three and a one point lead coming home.

The Minnedosa team forced Dagg to the outside with a last rock draw which rubbed a guard and Clegg stole a pair to win 9-6. Karen Toderian moved into the 3-way first place tie with a shut-out win over Marlene Murray (Heather)
