Manitoba Curling Hall Of Fame Inductees

The Manitoba Curling Hall of Fame Directors are pleased to introduce a new slate of inductees to be honoured at our Annual Dinner to be held at the Canad Inns - Polo Park, 1405 St. Matthews Ave., Winnipeg, Manitoba on Sunday, May 2, 2010. This year's slate of honourees will include a pair of veteran builders and a veteran team. It also includes a pair of Manitoba's top women's curlers and a champion team from the modern era along with a pair of modern era builders.  Pictured are inductees (l-r: Georgina Anderson, Doug Armstrong, Debbis Jones-Walker, Rick Mutton, Barb Enright

Veteran – Builder
Marian Rowlands was a lady curler affiliated with the Granite Club. In the early 1900’s ladies in Manitoba curled on mixed teams and in special competitions as part of the Men’s Bonspiel. In 1924 a group led by Mrs. Rowlands met to form a ladies curling association. Mrs. Rowlands was elected president of this group and Mrs. Bea Gunn acted as secretary. The M.L.C.A. was then formally organized with 8 affiliated clubs. Marian Rawlands is an Honorary Life Member of the Canadian Curling Association.

Veteran – Builder
J.W. DeCourcy O’Grady is one of the great builders in Manitoba’s curling history. His legacy endures today in the form of the venerable O’Grady Challenge Cup. He was president of the MCA 1907-1908; patron of the MCA 1909-1910 and again president in 1910-1911. The O’Grady Cup represents friendly competition between affiliated MCA clubs. These clubs once extended into South Western Ontario and Saskatchewan.

Builder
Georgina Anderson, a dedicated volunteer, has spent countless hours at meetings and in boardrooms. This included 10 years on the M. L. C. A. Board. She was the first president of the amalgamated MCA organization and was a C.C.A. board member from 2003-2008. Georgina is a Honorary Life Member of the MCA (2002).

Builder
Rick Mutton became MCA President in 2002 after 10 years of dedicated work on the MCA Council. Rick was a Brier volunteer in 1998 and 2008. He was Manitoba Curling Hall of Fame chairman of selection from 2002 to 2007. Rick has compiled very comprehensive statistical records of Manitoba curling champions and bonspiel winners. This has required many, many hours of research. Rick is an Honorary Life Member of the M.C.A. (1987).

Curler
Debbie Jones-Walker was competitive curler in Manitoba fro 1977 to 2003. She has made 12 provincial women’s appearances and 4 provincial mixed appearances. She is a 3 time Provincial Women’s Champion (1977, 1999 and 2000) and Provincial Mixed Champion (1977). She is a two time Canadian Champion-Canadian Mixed (1977) and Canadian Women’s and World Champion as 5th on the Connie Laliberte Team.

Curler
Barb Enright has been a competitive curler in Manitoba from 1982 to the present. To her credit she has 4 Provincial Junior Women’s appearances; 15 Provincial Women’s appearances; and 3 Provincial Mixed appearances. She was Provincial Junior Champion in 1984 and Provincial Women’s Champion in 1986 and 2003. In 1984 She was a Canadian Junior Women’s Champion.

Team
In 1999 the Manitoba Men’s team shipped by Jeff Stoughton with Jon Mead at third, Garry VanDenBerghe at second, and Doug Armstrong at lead had a successful year. Curling out of the Charleswood Curling Club they won the Manitoba and Canadian Championships and were silver medalists at the World Championships. Again in 2000 they were Manitoba Champions.

Veteran – Team
The Lily Clark team, curling out of the Portage La Prairie Curling Club, won back to back Manitoba Ladies Championships (1956 – 1957). The team consisted of Lily Clark (Skip), Vic Painter (Third), Helen Wishart (Second), Diane Kitson (Lead). They also have 7 MLCA Bonspiel Trophy wins to their credit.
