MCA #122- MONDAY DRAW #20: Hamblin Wins Bonspiel Championship

Curl Manitoba’s 122nd MCA Men’s Bonspiel has ended with the Bonspiel Championship, the first under the sponsorship of Sport Manitoba, being won by the Morris team of David Hamblin, Ross Derksen, Ryan Thomson and Mark Georges (pictured with Kim Browning of Sport Manitoba). The Morris foursome defeated David Kraichy and his Pembina team6-5 in the bonspiel final Monday evening at Heather CC. It was the second bonspiel title for Hamblin and Derksen who won the Grand Aggregate trophy, the de facto bonspiel title, in 2004 under the former bonspiel format.

A three for Hamblin on the third end gave his team a two point lead but Kraichy fought back to tie coming home. Hamblin hit and stuck with a last rock takeout for the win.

In the Winnipeg Free Press event final, Randy Dutiaume (West Kildonan) was an 8-2 winner over Kevin Larson (Springfield).

In the Safeway Lucerne event final, Mark Olson (Granite) was a 7-3 winner over Derek Dowsett (Stonewall).

Manitoba Hydro: Wayne Ewasko (Heather) 6-5 over Errol Klinck (Assiniboine Memorial)

thecurler.com: Dave Watt (West St Paul) 7-2 over Kelly Williamson (Thistle)
Lafarge Construction:  Reg Malanchuk (Ft Rouge) 4-3 over Howard Doerksen)
Great West Life: A.J. Hunter (Ft Garry) 6-4 over Bill Burkett (Victoria)
8 Ender: Justin Reynolds (Thistle) 7-6 over Jim MacGregor (Ft Rouge)
Manitoba Pork Council: Mark Blanchard (Ft Rouge) 7-4 over Adam Boge (West Kildonan)
Monsanto Canada: David Kendall (Wildewood) 8-5 over Bryan Novak (Argyle)
Canada’s Web Shop: Drew Knox (Elmwood) 8-5 over Glenn McLachlan (West Kildonan)

The five Safeway Championship berths available through the bonspiel were won by David Hamblin (Morris), Doug Riach (West Kildonan), Andrew Irving (Heather), Kevin Larson (Springfield), and Jim Kirkness (Ft. Rouge) who won a four-team playoff Monday evening.

More MCA #122- MONDAY DRAW #18: Three Safeway Berths Awarded - Four-Way Tie for the Last one: Game results in the semi-finals on the morning draw resulted in the allocation of three Safeway Championship berths and left four teams preparing for two more games Monday evening in a playoff for the final bonspiel invitation to Steinbach. Kevin Larson-Springfield (8-5 over Rob Fleming-Morden) and Andrew Irving-Heather (6-2 over Dave Johnson-Pembina) both won Safeway berths. Doug Riach-West Kildonan earned the third as his team was advanced to a berth-position when they dropped out of the Sport Manitoba semi-final yesterday.

Fleming, Johnson, Jim Kirkness-Fort Rouge (who lost 8-4 to Mark Olson) and Steve Pauls-Manitou (who lost a quarter-final game yesterday afternoon to Randy Dutiaume) are the four teams in the special berth playoff.  Johnson plays Fleming and Kirkness plays Pauls at 6PM Monday evening at Heather. The winners play for the championship entry at 9PM.

Meanwhile, as a result of the 1PM draw, all event final matches are now set.

MCA #122- MONDAY Final Day Begins: With three draws Monday, the MCA 122nd Annual Men's Bosnspiel will end at Thistle, Fort Rouge and Heather Curling Clubs. After the last rounds of quarter & semi-finals on the 9am and 1pm draws, the finals take place at 7PM Monday evening.  The feature game, the Sport Manitoba Bonspiel Championship game between David Hamblin-Morris and David Kraichy-Pembina, will take place at Heather. Other event finals at Heather will include the Manitoba Hydro, thecurler.com, Great West Life, and 8-Ender events.

The Winnipeg Free Press, Chas. Fidler & Son, LaFarge Construction, and Manitoba Pork Council event finals are scheduled for Fort Rouge. The Safeway-Lucerne, Bituminex Paving, Monsanto Canada, and Canada's Web Shop event finals are set for Thistle.

The Safeway Lucerne, Bituminex Paving, Monsanto Canada, and Canada's Web Shop event finals take place at Thistle CC.

On the late draw Sunday Mark Olson-Granite, Jim Kirkness-Ft Rouge, and Ken Tresoor-Unaffiliated won games inthe Safeway Lucerne event while Rob Fleming-Morden and Kevin Larson-Springfield won Winnipeg Free Press event games.

Of these, Kirkness, Fleming and Larson are believed to be eligible to advance if they reach the Safeway Championship berth qualifying stage.
