Playing for a Reason

Saturday Jan 30 2010

Shoulder patches on the jackets of Brent Strachan's Hamiota Senior Men's Champions tell the story. They say simply IN SUPPORT OF ALS RESEARCH. Brent's brother Dallas has been stricken with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) and those patches serve to remind the team that there are tougher things than a curling game. And they serve to remind opponents and spectators of the need for money for reasearch into this, and in fact every such disease.

Dallas was perhaps better known as a hockey player but he curled alongside Brent and Dale Brooks, playing in a provincial Mixed Championship and three Safeway Championships.

This year's return to the Strathcona Senior Mens to defend their championship has been dedicatd to SUPPORT OF ALS RESEARCH. The reigning Manitoba champions will be adding a $50 bill to their contribution specifically for every game they win at Brandon (and presumably at the National level, if they are able to repeat).

WRITER'S COMMENT ..... It is a great cause and an interesting challenge for their opponents, isn't it. When the need is so great for this kind of research support it doesn't seem right to beat them.

But perhaps the solution to that dilemma is simple. Perhaps the opponent could make the $50 contribution if they beat Strachan.

I'LL DO MY BIT ... When I talked with the team about this yesterday, I offered to put $20 in the research kitty for every Strachan team win at the Provincials. I apologize to the rest of the teams for that, the motivation to make me write the biggest possible cheque appeals to the Strachan team members.

HOW ABOUT JOINING US IN THIS?  If you'd like to join in supporting the team's research funding quest, contact the Strachan team direct OR send me an email at resby@mts.net or rocktalk@mts.net. I'll get you connected with them.
