MCA 122-SATURDAY (DRAW 9&10) - Twelve Advance in the Championship Event: (Note: Draw 11-6pm Saturday & Draw 12-9pm Saturday and Draw 9 & Draw 10 Results plus Icing Locations are included in pdf form on links at the end of this article) .............. The 122nd MCA Bonspiel has reached the stage in the Championship Sport Manitoba event where it is time to start reporting all the scores - and not cherry-picking the ones that are fun to comment on. The feature games on the noon draw had two Safeway Championship bound teams facing off with the young team of David Kraichy, Pembina coming out on top. Kraichy posted a 6-5 win over Randy Neufeld, LaSalle but there may be room for some discussion whether the result would have been the same if Birk Cramer had finished the game. Playing with one sweeper makes it tough going. Of greater concern than the loss, of course, is whether Cramer will be available for the Safeway Championship in two weeks time.

Another Steinbach-bound team, that of Dave Elias-West Kildonan, lost their Sport Manitoba event game on the 3pm draw 5-3 to Adam Norget, Pembina. Former World Junior Champion David Hamblin, Morris stayed unbeaten with a 9-6 win over Russ Kihn, St Vital and Manitoba Senior Men's Champion Brent Strachan, Hamiota stayed perfect with a 5-3 win over Dale Fust, Portage.

In other Sport Manitoba games on the noon draw:
Mike Hebert, St Vital 7-2 Ron Duncan, Unaffiliated
Eugene Desjarlais, West Kildonan 7-3 Dave Mowat, Elmwood
Don Nelson, St Vital 5-2 Allan Lyburn, Brandon
Doug Riach, West Kildonan 5-3 Scott Madams
Kevin Larson, Springfield 6-1 Walter Rychkrand, Elmwood.

In other Sport Manitoba games on the 3pm draw:
Steen Sigurdson, Virden 8-2 Kevin Olmstead, Carberry
Derek Dowsett, Stonewall 6-2 Dave Tonnellier, West Kildonan
Allan Neyedley, Deer Lodge 7-6 Danieal Birchard, Pembina

In the Free Press event at noon, among the teams still alive and in the chase for a Safeway berth are Collin Sundell, Victoria; Brad Haight, West Kildonan; Steve Pauls, Manitou; Neil Okamura, Pembina; and Troy Hamilton, Ft Rouge.

In the Safeway-Lucerne event at noon, among the teams still alive and chasing a Safeway Championship spot are Jared Kolomaya, Stonewall; Bob Bartley, Carman, Jim Kirkness, Ft Rouge, and Andrew Irving, Pembina.

It is an unofficial competition between the two Coutts teams. Son Michael and his Deer Lodge foursome are at 2-2 after four games while my own Norm Magnusson-skipped foursome is at 3-1.

So far that gives us bragging rights and after a win this morning over Andrew Wickman by a 6-2 score in what has to qualify in my own WhodaThunkIt listing, Team Magnusson shows some promise. Don’t tell Mike, of course, that I sat out while Don Smith subbed in at lead this morning.

Long-term for the bonspiel, I probably like Mike’s chances a little better. He is challenging in our own thecurler.com event – wearing thecurler.com jackets should be worth a couple of points shouldn’t it?

Meanwhile, we are one of those teams which the teams who want to win a berth both dread and cheer for, depending on the draw. They dread playing us because there is just a chance we can still make a few shots. They cheer for us to beat the others because we are ineligible to advance so the further we go, the better it looks for the guys in the other side of the draw.

In the Bonspiel Championship Sport Manitoba event, the results this morning are pretty much of the IdaBetOnIt variety. For example:
Dave Elias, West Kildonan 6-1 Mark Olson, Granite
David Hamblin, Morris 7-5 Dave Dyment, Heather

Or of the FlipACoin variety. For example:
Adam Norget, Pembina 6-5 Ian Beavis, Ft Rouge
Brent Strachan, Hamiota 6-1 Rob Atkins, Victoria

But there were a few surprises in the Safeway Lucerne event. WhodaThunkIt for example:
Warren McCutcheon, Carman 5-1 Jason Gunnlaugson,Beausejour
Dave Carswell, St Vital 8-0 Dave Boehmer, Petersfield
Norm Magnusson, Ft Rouge 6-2 Andrew Wickman, West Kildonan

..............This is the day in the MCA 122nd Men’s bonspiel when teams begin to go home. Half the participants will lose their sixth game, on either the 6pm or 9pm draw and they’ll be watching TV tomorrow. The lone exception, of course is the teams in the Bonspiel Championship Sport Manitoba event.  As these teams get their first losses, they’ll drop to the Winnipeg Free Press and Safeway Lucerne events. That’s where those still in the chase get their second chance at the provincial championship berths.

The Sport Manitoba event provides TWO Safeway Championship berths – one each to the finalists if they’re eligible. If not, the berths flow down to the Free Press and Safeway. In those two events, the winners get berths and the losers in the finals playoff for the fifth spot available. Of course, ineligible teams set up the probability of count-backs and playoffs.

In the Sport Manitoba event, Randy Neufeld, David Kraichy, Allan Lyburn, Kelly Marnoch and Dave Elias are the teams still alive who hold provincial berths. Mark Olson, who has Jeff Stoughton’s lead in the line-up, is also still unbeaten. Unaffiliated teams skipped by Ron Duncan and Brent McLean are also in the morning mix. Any of those eight reaching the final will create the drop of a berth to the Free Press and Safeway. Of course, it is also possible other teams in the unbeaten list are also not eligible, adding to work in the draw room.

Among those teams, Olson plays Elias at 9AM (Ice 243-West St Paul) and Neufeld plays Kraichy at noon (Ice 111-Ft Garry). Other well-known names still in that chase are David Hamblin, Doug Riach, Scott Madams, Don Nelson, Steen Sigurdson, Daniel Birchard, Dave Tonnellier, Bob Bartley, Brent Strachan, Adam Norget, and Ian Beavis but there are few totally unknown teams still in that undefeated chase for the Bonspiel Championship and a Safeway berth.

Among the teams who have already dropped through the top two events, and thus lost their provincial chance for this year, the notables include Vic Peters and Peter Nicholls.
