MCA #122 (DRAW 5 & 6 Results) Tarapasky Beats Peters - Really! WhodaThunkIt

Thursday Jan 28 2010

(Note: Draw 7-9pm Friday & Draw 8-9am Saturday, Draw 5 Results & Draw 6 Results, plus Icing Locations are included in pdf form on links at the end of this article) ...............A pair of prime candidates to contend for Safeway berths through the 122nd MCA 'spiel are on the sidelines - as far as winning a trip tot he provincials goes.  WhodaThunkIt - Vic Peters and Peter Nicholls were both out of contention by supper time Friday. Peters lost a 5-4 game to Mitchell Tarapasky, Victoria and the infamous Team Turmoil (Kevin SHoemaker, Les Sutherland, Clay Kitching & 5th Larry Mack). It was a game of a lifetime, by Tarapasky's admission. He didn't have to throw his final stone coming home.  And Nicholls 3pm scores shows as a 10-0 loss to Pepeto Bismoli, West St Paul. Officially, that indicates a default. The Nicholls team had to withdraw when an injury to Dean Dunstone left them short-staffed.

MCA 122- Draw 3&4 Results: Boehmer Loss the Biggest Surprise:
(Note: Draw 5-3pm Friday & Draw 6-6pm Friday, Draw 3 Results & Draw 4 Results, plus Icing Locations are included in pdf form on links at the end of this article)
...............It has been a bit busy getting a system in place and no doubt we'll get a little more efficient as we go along but here are some high (and low) lights from the Friday 9am and noon draws. Safeway zone winners Randy Neufeld, Bob Sigurdson, Kelly Marnoch and Allan Lyburn were among the winners, moving to 2-0, while William Lyburn lost. No big deal to the younger Lyburn who has a Safeway berth but a big deal to Peter Nicholls who also lost and only has one chance left.  A couple of quality junior teams had wins, one of them over Dave Boehmer. A former junior finalist defeated Team Turmoil and who knew MLA and Cabinet Minister Andrew Swan (no - there are no Honourables in a curling report) could play - a big winner over Junior champion Connor Njegovan.

WhodaThunkIt
Andrew Swan, Thistle 12-4 Connor Njegovan, Deer Lodge
Mike Hebert, St Vital 6-1 Peter Nicholls, Deer Lodge
Fernando Requiema, West St Paul 8-2 William Lyburn, Brandon
Greg McDonald, Ft Rouge 8-5 Joachim Suther, Norway
Daniel Birchard, Pembina 7-1 Dave Boehmer, Petersfield

IdaBetOnIt if asked about these games.
Scott Barth, Assiniboine Memorial 6-2 Mitchell Tarapasky, Victoria (The former junior finalist was just too much for Team Turmoil)
Doug Riach, West Kildonan 6-5 Fred Schnerch, Elmwood
Scott Madams, Pembina 5-4 Ron Toews, Ft Rouge
Dave Tonnellier, West Kildonan 8-0 Daryle Manning, Killarney
Kelly Marnoch, Carberry 8-4 Dave Carswell, St Vital
David Hamblin, Morris 7-4 Brian Guenther, Steinbach

There was no picking these ones,  FlipACoin.
Brad Haight, West Kildonan 7-4 Vic Peters, Ft Garry
Jamie McTavish, Pembina 7-1 Mark Franklin, Ft Rouge
Bob Bartley, Carman 8-7 Merv Satterthwaite, St Vital
Corey Chambers, Pembina 7-1 Cory Zdan, Alonsa

(Note: Draw 4-NOON Friday, Draw 2 Results, and Icing Locations are included in pdf form on links at the end of this article) ...............Since the line-up card isn't published, unless you were there (and I wasn't) you can't be sure who was in the line-up in an opening draw game for MCA #122. So speculating about the implications of the result can cause occasional embarrassment and even a little anger from a guy you said was a surprise winner. Hence I start this morning with an apology to Ron DeClercq and his Heather team and the winners of two other games over Safeway berth winners.

On the surface that looks like a WhodaThunkIt victory for DeClercq on the late draw Thursday over Jason Gunnlaugson. So that's the heading it goes under .......Ron DeClercq-Heather 12-2 Jason Gunnlaugson, Beausejour.
And WhodaThunkIt Andrew Wickman was a hot commodity in beating Vic Peters twice to win a Safeway zone but lost his opener......Derek Dowsett, Stonewall 6-1 Andrew Wickman, West Kildonan
And WhodaThunkIt Senior Gord Green made a run in the zones and carried it into the 'spiel with an opening win over another Safeway berth team...... Gord Green, Fort Rouge 6-5 Wayne Ewasko, Heather.

More according to the form chart, these next game results - IdaBetOnIt.
Lionel Walz,Pembina 6-3 Cory Sontag, Granite
Bob Bartley, Carman 11-1 Keith Williams, Fort Rouge
Dave Boehmer, Petersfield 6-5 AJ Hunter Ft Garry
Kelly Marnoch, Carberry 5-4 Don Stott, Heather
Brent Strachan, Hamiota 8-2 Michael Coutts, Deer Lodge
David Hamblin, Morris 8-4 Sieg Wall, Heather
Richard Muntain, Rosser 9-3 Lorne Vandersteen, West Kildonan
Murray Woodward, Flin Flon 8-2 Kelly Oleson, Victoria
Adam Norget, Pembina 9-2 Reg Sims, Deer Lodge

And, In the FlipACoin category, Ì wouldn`t have been surprised if these ones had gone either way.
Dave Elias, West Kildonan 7-3 Sean Grassie, Deer Lodge
Steen Sigurdson, Virden 8-2 Dave Johnson, Pembina
Tom Hyde, Portage 7-4 Kelly Lauber, Pembina
Mark Olson, Granite 8-2 Sean McDonald, Ft Rouge

DRAW #1 - MCA #122 is Rolling & Here are Early Results (DRAW 1)...........
(Note: Draw 3-9am Friday, Draw 1 Results, and Icing Locations are included in pdf form on links at the end of this article)
Although I don`t claim to be in the same league as the legendary Jack Matheson when it comes to reporting on curling, I don`t mind copying what was a great idea. Winnipeg Tribune readers always flipped first to Matty`s Bonspiel coverage and his `This Figured - This Didn`t` assessments. A year ago, I instituted my own under the headings IdaBetOnIt, WhodaThunkIt, and FlipACoin.

Most of the first round games of note come in under the heading of IdaBetOnIt. Several teams who already have Safeway berths in hand were on the ice on the early draw. They were mostly winners.
Randy Neufeld, LaSalle 7-6 Sam Antila, Burntwood
Bob Sigurdson, Granaite 8-6 Earl Lavallee, Ft Garry
David Kraichy, Pembina 6-3 Ken De Smet, Stonewall
Farrol Asham, Thomspon 6-5 Tyler Drews, LaSalle

I`d also have bet on the results of these two games
Brad Haight, West Kildonan 9-2 Howard Doerksen, Pembina
Peters Nicholls, Deer Lodge 6-3 David McLean, Assiniboine Memorial

WhoDaThunkIt - a team of Juniors shows up from Norway and beats a good Manitoba Safeway berth team that is only a couple of years away from being the provincial finalist.......Joachim Suther, Halden CC, Norway 5-4 David Bohn, Assiniboine Memorial
WhoDaThunkIt - I`m delighted to see Brian Penston`s name on the entry list for this year`s bonspiel and much as I like the former (1970) Manitoba Junior Champion, IdaBetOn Safeway Berth winner Ryan Hyde.........Brian Penston, Ft Rouge 5-1 Ryan Hyde, Portage
WhoDaThunkIt - My RockTalk co-host Mitch Tarapasky is undefeated in the MCA Bonspiel with a first game win....Mitchell Tarapasky, Victoria 7-2 John McLachlan, Deer Lodge

In the FlipACoin category, Ì wouldn`t have been surprised if these ones had gone either way.
Vic Peters Ft Garry 7-3 Steve Pauls, Manitou
Derek Samagalski, West St Paul 7-6 Mike Mahon, Deer Lodge
Collin Sundell, Victoria 7-3 Brent McCannell, Wildewood
