McEwen, Stoughton 3-2 Into Playoffs at BDO Classic

Friday Update #2: Jeff Stoughton scored an 8-3 win over John Shuster-USA on the late draw at the MTS Centre. The win improved his record to 3-2 and earned a playoff berth. Along with Stoughton, Mike McEwen's 3-2 record earned with an afternoon win, put him into a playoff berth.
Jason Gunnlaugson won his final game 6-3 over Ted Appelman to finish at 2-3. Based on win-loss records and the shoot-out scores (among tied teams), the top eight are:

3- Thomas Ulsrud-NOR (4-1)
4- Wayne Middaugh-ON (4-1)
5- Jeff Stoughton-MB (3-2)

In the 2pm quarter-finals Saturday, Howard plays Ursel; Martin plays McEwen; Ulsrud plays Ferbey; and Middaugh plays Stoughton.
The semi-finals are at 6pm Saturday.

Friday Update #2: Mike McEwen's Manitobans improved their record to 3-2 with an 8-4 win over Dale Matchett-ON while Kerry Burtnyk's final game was a disappointing 7-4 loss to David Nedohin (Team Ferbey-AB) . Burtnyk finished 2-3 and will not make the payoff round. McEwen will be a part of a tiebreaker round of several teams tied at 3-2, depending on results of the late draw this evening. Jeff Stoughton is at 2-2 and plays John Shuster-USA on the final draw, so Stoughton could make the tiebreak round. Jason Gunnlaugson plays Ted Apperlman-AB but is at 1-3 and will not make the playoffs.

Friday Update #1: Burtnyk, Stoughton, McEwen All 2-2 at BDO Classic - Kevin Martin, Thomas Ulsrud, and Glenn Howard remain undefeated with 4-0 records to lead their respective groups after two draws Friday at the BDO Classic Canadian Open in WInnipeg. Manitoban's Mike McEwen (7-3 over John Shuster-USA) and Jeff Stoughton (6-4 over Pat Simmons-SK) won their first games Friday while Kerry Burtnyk lost 8-7 on a stolen home end to Thomas Ulsrud-NOR. The three Manitobans all have 2-2 records. Jason Gunnlaugson won his first of the event Friday, a 6-4 win over Kevin Koe.

Thursday: Burtnyk Best of Manitobans at BDO Classic - Kevin Martin (AB), Canada’s 2010 Olympic representative, defending champion Glenn Howard (ON) and Thomas Ulsrud (NOR), Norway’s 2010 Olympic representative, all sit tied atop of the leaderboard with perfect 3-0 records following the first five draws of the BDO Classic Canadian Open, the men’s third 2009-10 Capital One Grand Slam of Curling series event, taking place at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg. Pat Simmons (SK) is also undefeated at the event with a record of 2-0.
Of the Manitobans, only Kerry Burtnyk has a positive record with 2 wins in three games. Jeff Stoughton and Mike McEwen are 1-2 while Jason Gunnlaugson in 0-3.

Wednesday: McEwen, Burtnyk Open BDO Classic with Wins - Manitobans Mike McEwen and Kerry Burtnyk opened the BDO Classic Canadian Open at the MTS Centre with wins Wednesday evening. McEwen was an 8-4 winner over Jeff Stoughton while Burtnyk made an open hit with his last rock coming home to score two and a comeback 6-5 victory over Jason Gunnlaugson. Gunnlaugson had stolen one on the sixth end for a 5-4 lead. Burtnyk blanked the seventh to hold the hammer coming home.
In the other opening games, Kevin Martin beat Chris Schille (6-1), Glenn Howard defeated Dale Matchett (6-5), and Wayne Middaugh was a 7-2 winner over Bob Ursel.
