Eight for Winnipeg Sun's Jim Bender

Jim Bender has been a busy guy this winter on the curling beat for the Winnipeg Sun, but that doesn't keep him away from his regular Tuesday night game at Deer Lodge. And a good thing, too. Jim (at left) and his squad of (l-r) Doug Bauer-2nd, Gerry Rogers-lead and Ken Stenson scored an eight this week. Bender was the strategy mastermind for the perfect end while Stenson was the shooter who made the last shot under pressure for the eight, to break open a 3-3 tie.

Always the journalist, Bender describes the last shot this way. "I was calling the game and throwing third rocks. Stenson was throwing skip rocks. He needed to hit second shot at back of 8-foot on the nose and stick with the hammer. He could very easily have jammed if he had thrown it wide or wrecked on our own rock at top 12 if inside. He made it perfectly," Bender said when asked for details.

Having been the occasional victim of an eight-ender myself, thecurler.com declines to identify the Bender team opponent.

Admittedly the photo is a little fuzzy - but a cell phone photo was all we have and it's clear enough to show the rock position - just not quite clear enough to show the Bender team grinning from ear to ear.
