SCOTTIES DRAW 13: Harvey 1st, Thurston 2nd
Wednesday Jan 06 2010
Although she was not the morning’s opponent, former champion Janet Harvey (Assiniboine Memorial) has ended the dream for Lisa Blixhavn (Brandon) and Chlesea Carey (Morden) at this year’s Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Killarney. Harvey scored a four on the 5th end to jump out to an 8-2 lead against previously undefeated Jill Thurston (Deer Lodge), then held on to lead 9-8 coming home. Harvey didn’t have to throw her final rock on the home end as Thurston missed a tricky three-rock combination that might have left her lying three. The miss left a Harvey counter on the button. Blixhavn and Carey played a game that could have had playoff implications. Carey hammered the Brandon team – scoring two threes and a four in the first five ends to make the final score 10-4 after five. So Harvey and Thurston finish 6-1 with Harvey in first place thanks to the win this morning. Carey and Blixhavn finish 5-2. In the other games, Kari Goethe (Swan River) defeated Karen Rosser (Springfield) 6-2 and Linda Stewart (Fort Rouge) beat Shauna Streich (Fort Rouge) 10-8. The game involved one of the best comebacks of the week. On the seventh end, Blixhavn was light on a draw, then rubbed with her last rock, leaving Thurston a draw for four and a 6-2 lead. The Brandon team fought back, scoring two, then stealing one on the ninth and one on the tenth to tie. But Thurston didn`t let them play the kind of end they had on the tenth, controlled the play and won the game without needing their final stone. With the win, Thurston is in the driver`s seat. She has a perfect 6-0 record. However she plays Janet Harvey tomorrow morning and the result of that game plus Blixhavn`s game with Chelsea Carey will determine first place. After winning her first four games, Carey lost a pair today to drop back to 4-2 and she now has to hope for some help tomorrow morning if she is to make the playoffs. On the late afternoon draw, Janet Harvey bounced back from her morning loss to Blixhavn and controlled her game with Carey most of the way after scoring a two on the first end. A three on the ninth ended it at 8-4. Harvey is at 5-1, tied in the standings with Blixhavn. In the other two games, Shauna Streich (Fort Rouge) needed a last rock takeout for an 8-6 win over Kari Goethe (Swan River) and Karen Rosser (Springfield) stole three on the ninth to end a 9-4 game with Linda Stewart (Fort Rouge) .

SCOTTIES DRAW 2: Where the morning draw at the Killarney Scotties Tournament of Hearts had only one close game – this afternoon’s draw had one blowout and three excellent matches, including a pair of extra ends. In the one short game, #2 seed – former champion Janet Harvey (Assiniboine Memorial) was a 9-1 7-end winner over another former champion, Karen Rosser (Springfield).
Shauna Streich (Fort Rouge) trailed Jill Thurston (Deer Lodge) 4-3 coming home and had to draw to the button with her last rock to tie – but Streich was just heavy enough to slide to the back of the four foot and Thurston won that one 5-3.
#3 seed Chelsea Carey (Morden) scored a deuce on the ninth to pull within a point , then built a wall that Linda Stewart (Fort Rouge) couldn’t get past on the tenth to steal a point for the tie. The extra end also went Carey way. With a rock biting the back of the button, Carey played a guard with her last, forcing Stewart to play a difficult rub and roll off a rock at the dge of the four foot. Her final shot didn’t curl up quite enough and Carey had her second consecutive steal and a 6-5 victory.
Lisa Blixhavn (Brandon) also had to go an extra end when she flashed a hit for the win on the tenth end but Blixhavn didn’t have to throw her last rock on the 11th as Kari Goethe (Swan River) was unable to outdraw the Blixhavn counter in a 7-6 win for the Brandon foursome.
