SCOTTIES DRAW 2: Wins for Harvey, Carey, Thurston and Blixhavn
Wednesday Jan 06 2010
Where the morning draw at the Killarney Scotties Tournament of Hearts had only one close game – this afternoon’s draw had one blowout and three excellent matches, including a pair of extra ends. In the one short game, #2 seed – former champion Janet Harvey (Assiniboine Memorial) was a 9-1 7-end winner over another former champion, Karen Rosser (Springfield).
Shauna Streich (Fort Rouge) trailed Jill Thurston (Deer Lodge) 4-3 coming home and had to draw to the button with her last rock to tie – but Streich was just heavy enough to slide to the back of the four foot and Thurston won that one 5-3.
#3 seed Chelsea Carey (Morden) scored a deuce on the ninth to pull within a point , then built a wall that Linda Stewart (Fort Rouge) couldn’t get past on the tenth to steal a point for the tie. The extra end also went Carey way. With a rock biting the back of the button, Carey played a guard with her last, forcing Stewart to play a difficult rub and roll off a rock at the dge of the four foot. Her final shot didn’t curl up quite enough and Carey had her second consecutive steal and a 6-5 victory.
Lisa Blixhavn (Brandon) also had to go an extra end when she flashed a hit for the win on the tenth end but Blixhavn didn’t have to throw her last rock on the 11th as Kari Goethe (Swan River) was unable to outdraw the Blixhavn counter in a 7-6 win for the Brandon foursome.
