A full entry of 144 golfers, including seventeen Manitoba curling champions, generated a net charitable contribution of over $25,000 to curling’s favourite charity, the Sandra Schmirler Foundation, as well as the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba in the July 23 Sandra Schmirler Manitoba Golf Classic. The 5th annual event, and the fifth played at Larters at St. Andrews Golf and Country Club, was deemed the ‘best ever’ by volunteers, sponsors and participants who have taken part in all four previous events. In announcing a now five-year total of over $80,000 raised for the charities, Chairman Zivan Saper also announced a commitment by title sponsor Winnipeg Free Press, and by the organizing committee, to host the 6th annual on July 22, 2010 again at Larters. Speaking at the evening prize banquet, Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba Executive Director Lesia Sianchuk said often there are as many as twenty babies in the Hospital’s Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit. Ms. Sianchuk thanked all of the participants for the contribution they make in support of the babies and neo-natal research through the two charities. On the golf course, the winning score of 58 in the scramble format event was posted by Mike Mason, Neal McDonald, Joel Davison, and Keith Burch, and , who are pictured l-r with team supporter Ryan Possnikov (at right).
