RockTalk-TSN 1290

Sports Radio 1290 became TSN 1290 and the Winnipeg Jets became a permanent part of the programming in the fall of 2011. However, curling is still a part of the Radio Sports-Talk scene in Manitoba with RockTalk returning for a weekly hour (Wednesdays, 7-8pm) at 1290 on the AM Radio dial. Resby Coutts and Jordan Bauldic co-host with results and event updates, live in-studio guests and feature interviews - all about the Manitoba curling scene. FEBRUARY 8, 2012: Safeway championship co-chair Ray Baker, also a participant at third for Ray Kujanpaa, and Shaw TV colour commentator Don Finkbeiner, a former Manitoba champion, are interview guests on this week's RockTalk which is available now in our MP3 archive Version (LINK HERE). Team Stoughton fifth Garth Smith. Canadian Senior champ Kelly RObertson, and CurlManitoba Executive Director comment on the recent MSSA announcement of Team Stoughton as Manitoba's 2011 Team of the Year.

FEBRUARY 1, 2012: An exciting final game on an exceptional Scotties Tournament of Hearts presentred by Monsanto, the Safeway Championship Seeds announcement, and the start of the Canadian Juniors this weekend provided lots to talk about on this week's RockTalk on TSN 1290. Resby Coutts, with Jordan Bauldic, has the comments of all four members of the JenniferJones Scotties Champion team; the thoughts of #2 seed Mike McEwen and #4 William Lyburn looking ahead to the Safeway Championship in Dauphin; and Junior Men's champion coach Calvin Edie looks forward to the Canadian Juniors. JANUARY 25, 2012: With the Scotties Tournament of Hearts presented by Monsanto underway at the PCU Centre in Portage and with the 124th MCA Bonspiel just over, there was lots to talk about tonight on RockTalk (TSN 1290 7-8PM) OR (on-line http://www.tsn.ca/Winnipeg/listen/). Chelsea Carey and Jill Officer on the Scotties - bonspiel Champion Craig Brown along with Brian Novak, Jamie Pearson, Bruce Hudson, Lorne Hamblin, and 1971 Manitoba finalist Larry Taylor all talk about the MCA bonspiel. Kevin Wiebe on Ironman Curling, Shauna Jurczak on the February 25 Jeff Stoughton fundraiser for Lung Association of Manitoba, and Scotties Coach Howard Restall round out the only hour of broadcast curling talk in the world. JANUARY 18, 2012:  TSN Curling Commentator and Olympic Gold Medallist Russ Howard and Monsanto Public and Industry Affairs Director Trish Jordan joined Host Resby Coutts on this week's edition of RockTalk (TSN 1290). The hour of curling conversation ranged across everything from last weekend's Continental Cup to the DEKALB Super League and the seeds announcement Tuesday for the 2012 Scotties Tournament of Hearts, presented by Monsanto. Spot interview guests included Rob Atkins of Atkins Curling Supplies, who is moving shop for Friday and Saturday of the MCA Bonspiel to FourPlay Sports Bar on Portage Avenue; Carman's Dean North, DEKALB Super League Champion; Portage Scotties Co-Chair JoAnne Inglis and both Cathy Overton-Clapham & Chelsea Carey talking about next week's Manitoba WOmen's Championship. JANUARY 10, 2012:  World Champions Jeff Stoughton and Reid Carruthers were interview guests on the January 19 edition of RockTalk on TSN 1290, Wednesday, January 10. LINK HERE to our archived mp3 version of the program. Both talked about the the 6 weeks ahead as they prepare to defend their championship titles. Stoughton's primarfy message, however, suported his team's involvement with the Manitoba Lung Association's Febraury 25th Hit & Roll Fundraiser Bonspiel and Banquet at which Stoughton will be the keynote speaker. Carruthers also talked about the CurlManitoba Roadhouse which took him and Jason Gunnlaugson to 10 rural Manitoba communities for a series of youth clinics and promotional visits during the first half of this curling seaosn. Youth Olympian Derek Oryniak and CCA High Performance Director talk about the Youth Olympics which begin this weekend in Austria. Minnedosa Mayor Ray Orr and community promotoer John Lewis discuss plans for a new recreation complex in their community which could see the provincial Scotties Tournament of Hearts played there in the next few years.

DECEMBER 21: A few days after defending his BDO Canadian Open Championship title, Mike McEwen returns to RockTalk for an interview which ranges across his remarkable fall season, the Grand Slam victory, the developing field for the Dauphin Safeway Championship , and the team’s rivalry with World Champion Jeff Stoughton. Daley & Vic Peters, Jason Gunnlaugson, and Jim Coleman & AJ Girardin all talk about their Safeway Regional qualifying wins, Jill Thurston talks about her Scotties Regional win and looks forward to Portage. Resby Coutts and co-host Jordan Bauldic wrap up the final RockTalk show of 2011 with a re-cap of the big curling news stories of the year.

DECEMBER 14:  TSN 1290's RockTalk featured two of Manitoba curling's top skips, Chelsea Carey and William Lyburn. Our archived mp3 version is available here. Along with a short interview appearance by MCT Champion Rob Fowler, Carey & Lyburn share their opinions on a wide range of topics including the five-rock free guard, the seeding of Winnipeg Regional playoffs, changes to the Manitoba Curling Tour and Manitoba teams accumulating CTRS points.

DECEMBER 7: The perhaps inevitable but still unfortunate, occasional `technical difficulties`prevented us from capturing an archive version of this week`s RockTalk which featured Lorne Hamblin, Coach of China`s National Men`s team - Pacific Champions.

NOVEMBER 30: Meghan Armit, skip of the Manitoba team which won last weekend's Dominion Curling Club Champions Championship in Richmond, was a guest on the November 30 edition of RockTalk on TSN 1290. Along with Armit's comments on the experience, listen in on our archive version of the show (LINK HERE) for the comments of Manitoba Men's skip Barry Mandryk whose team fell short in a 5-4 tiebreaker game loss.

CurlManitoba Executive Director Shane Ray also joins Resby Coutts and Jordan Bauldic for the first time this year to talk about entry trends, new CurlManitoba programs such as the Reid Carruthers-Jason Gunnlaugson Roadshow, and some of the misconceptions people have about the role of CurlManitoba on the Manitoba Curling scene.

NOVEMBER 16: Mike McEwen, in the studio, and Sean Grassie, on the telephone from the Canadian Mixed in Sudbury, were the special guests on the November 16 edition of RockTalk on TSN 1290. McEwen talks about his World #1 ranking, his thoughts pon a 5-rock free gaurd zone, and a range of other topics. Grassie, of course, is 7-4 at the Canadian Mixed. He talks about his chances of making the playoffs, the way his week has gone so far, and about the new 14 team championship format.

NOVEMBER 9: Manitoba's Sean Grassie team left early Thursday enroute to Sudbury, ON for the Canadian Mixed. Wednesday evening, Grassie dropped in at the TSN 1290 studio on Pembina Highway for a guest appearance on RockTalk. Over the course of an hour, Grassie talked about his observations of Manitoba curling's juniors, his semifinal showing at the WCT event in Portage, the book he is writing on the MCA bonspiel, and of course on the next week at the Canadian Mixed. NOVEMBER 2: The November 2 edition of RockTalk (TSN 1290 - Wednesdays 7-8pm) is now available here in an archived mp3 form. OCTOBER 26: RockTalk returned to the airwaves Wednesday evening with Resby Coutts and Jordan Bauldic co-hosting. Along with current curling news, this week's program included discussionof the new timing system to be used in CManitoba Championship play this year with Head Umpire Rose Neufeld who had her first experience with supervising 'thinking time' at last weekend's Manitoba Lotteries Women's Classic. Skeleton Gold Medalist Jon Montgomery, in a feature interview, talks about his experience & lessons learned, and provides some advice for Kelly Robertson's Canadian Senior Men's Champions as they prepare to go to the World Seniors in Denmark in April. Robertson is also featured as he talks about the curling season ahead.

Our archived version of the October 26 first TSN 1290 edition of RockTalk has been divided into two parts. RockTalk is a one-hour seasonal curling talk show on Sports Radio 1290 - Manitoba's All-Sports All The Time station. RockTalk airs Wednesdays at 7pm and can be heard live at 1290 AM Radio OR on-line at www.sportsradio1290.com. The 2010-2011 show hosted by Resby Coutts has been co-hosted by broadcast student Jordan Bauldic. Mitch Tarapasky is a semi-regular guest along with many Manitoba curling personalities who make occasional in-studio or interview guest appearances.

APRIL 13, 2011: The final 2010-11 season edition of RockTalk is now available in an on-line archived mp3 version. MARCH 23, 2011: Retired Curling Broadcaster Bob Picken made a special guest appearance March 23 on RockTalk to talk about next year's Canadian Open Masters Championship and to share with Hosts Resby Coutts and Jordan Bauldic his opinions on everything from Jeff Stoughton's status as the greatest Manitoba curler to the origin  of the Manitoba 'tuck' delivery. MARCH 16, 2011: New Canadian Champion Reid Carruthers joined Resby Coutts, Mitch Tarapasky and Jordan Bauldic this week on RockTalk to talk about his first Brier win and look ahead to the World Championship in Regina in early April. Jordan Bauldic was at the Winnipeg Airport Monday when the chamipons returned from theBrier and beings the comments of Jeff Stoughton, Jon Mead, and Garth Smith  along with comments from National University SIlver Madallists Jim Coleman and Ian Fordyce. CurlManitoba Executive Director Shane Ray was also at the airport to greet the teams and we have his comments on the Canadian Curling Trials announcement. MARCH 9, 2011: With Jordan Bauldic in Winnipeg and Resby Coutts at the Brier in London for the Canadian Curling Trials announcement, the March 9 edition of RockTalk became a Canadian Trails Special Edition. Howard talked about the Brier and assesses the teams, the performance of his brother Russ in the TSN booth, and the Scotties Jones-Holland final tonight on RockTalk on Sports Radio 1290 (LINK HERE to an archived mp3 version of the program). Team Stoughton's fifth Garth Smith joined in with the Manitoba perspective and Manitoba Senior Champions Kelly Robertson and Deborah Popovic as well as Sr Women's finalist Sandra Cowling were also included with their thoughts on last week's championship at Heather. Mitch Tarapasky returned to join Resby Coutts and Jordan Bauldic to talk about the past week in curling.

FEBRUARY 23, 2011: Kerry Burtnyk has re-united his 1995 World Champion teamm-mates Jeff Ryan and Keith Fenton  (Rob Meakin is busy at the Scotties but he's too young anyway) for a run at the Manitoba Seniors title. Seeded #1 in the Strathcona Senior Men's, which begins Thursday at Heather,  Burtnyk is an interview guest on the February 23 edition of RockTalk which is available now in an archived mp3 version. Burtnyk recollects Brandon '95 and talks about his run at the Seniors along with commenting on the 2010 Safeway championship won by Jeff Stoughton. Third seeded Senior Women's skip Karen Rosser and her third Jan Sandison also preview the Seniors.

This week's program, hosted by Jordan Bauldic and Resby Coutts, also profiles the recently announced inductees into the Manitoba Curling Hall of Fame. Ron Smith and Bruce Hudson (regarding the late Fred Smith), Cathy Gauthier (regarding the 1992 & 1995 Connie Laliberte teams, and builders Jerry Brown and Sylvia Erickson all react to the induction announcements.

FEBRUARY 16, 2011: The Wednesday, February 16 edition of RockTalk is now available in an archived mp3 version. FEBRUARY 2, 2011: Ron Westcott was Wednesday night's guest on RockTalk. A Manitoba champion in his own right, he is justly proud of his daughter Raunora's accomplishment in winning a second consecutive Manitoba Scotties championship. Hear the thoughts of the new Manitoba champions and the insights of Ron Westcott on our archived mp3 version of RockTalk hosted by Resby Coutts and Jordan Bauldic. In the final segment, we look forward to the Safeway Championship with a little speculation about the seeds. The show includes the answers to a couple of pretty good trivia questions.

1) Leslie Wilson and Raunora Westcott have won back to back Manitoba Scotties titles. How many times has it happened since the first  championship in 1952. How many and who?
2) Steve Gould and Jeff Stoughton, IF THEY WIN IN BEAUSEJOUR, will become only the second and third person to accomplish a Manitoba Men's championship feat which has only been done by one other person? What - and who is the one.

JANUARY 26, 2011: RockTalk's annual MCA bonspiel special is a series of 'everyman curler' interviews with the peple I encounter during the MCA annual bonspiel. People I played against like Dave Elias, Phil Spevack, Andrew Swan, and Kevin Grumniski - folks I encounter at the Opening Ceremony like Ernie Rehberg, Jack Jackson and Scott Masloroff - and others like Rob Atkins all have great  MCA Bonspiel memories to share and ideas how we can celebrate the 2013, 125th annual MCA bonspiel in a big way.
